Californians Fleeing to Nevada

Taxes have consequences. That’s something tax increasers don’t understand. Remember how Gov. Jerry Brown and others campaigned last year for Prop. 30, saying millionaires had to “pay their fair share” (even though “millionaire” was defined, in California math, as someone making $250,000 a year)? But they insisted the tax increase would not drive people out. Wrong.
The reality, from Joel Fox:
Anecdotal, yes, but a news report indicates that warnings made during the Prop 30 campaign last year are playing out — higher taxes are sending some Californians across the state line to Nevada.
Under the headline, California Rich Seek Nevada Tax Haven, in the Tahoe Daily Tribune, the article says that Californians accounted for 43 percent of the 288 sales so far this year in Incline Village and Crystal Bay. More to the point, an Incline Village real estate broker reports that of the 39 sales on Nevada shores of Lake Tahoe to Californians since the beginning of the year, 15 buyers, forty percent of the total, specifically said they moved to Nevada to escape the Prop. 30 tax hikes.
Other brokers confirmed that there has been an increase in high-end housing sales that the reporter wrote was attributed to California residents’ “desire to get beyond the reach of the Golden State taxman.” Sales on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe were stronger than on the California side with a broker quoted as saying, “Prop. 30 probably has something to do with that.”
Some would argue the numbers reflected in the article are not significant. However, since the California tax system is built something like an upside down pyramid with the few at the bottom holding up the structure, a small but significant stream of high end taxpayers moving to low tax states could have consequences on California’s bottom line.
I hope so. I hope tax collections plunge sharply so the taxpayers get to keep more of their money and the state’s finances implode faster. The faster that happens, the faster we can enact reforms.

[VIDEO] : Reps. Bachmann, Gohmert, King Thank Egypt for Overthrowing ‘Evil’ Muslim Brotherhood

With all eyes on Syria this weekend, Reps. Michele Bachmman (R-MN), Louie Gohmert (R-TX) andSteve King (R-IA) traveled to Egypt to deliver a highly unconventional message of support to the Egyptian military for eradicating “common enemy” the Muslim Brotherhood.
In a 15 minute news conference-style video broadcast over a pro-government satellite network and shown by Egyptian state media, Bachmann announced, “We are here as members of Congress to say, ‘We are with you, and we encourage you.’” She proceeded to falsely associate the Muslim Brotherhood with the September 11th, 2001 attacks, saying, “We have seen the threat that the Muslim Brotherhood has posed around the world. We stand against this great evil. We remember who caused 9/11. We remember who it was that killed 3,000 brave Americans.”
She described the “terrorists who have shown themselves so recently in the form of the Muslim Brotherhood” as a “common enemy” for the U.S. and Egypt, adding, “We don’t have a choice. They must be defeated.”
Subsequent comments from Gohmert and King were no less damning, with Gohmert vowing to protect American military aid to Egypt to help combat the “bloodthirsty Muslim brothers.”
One expert on Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood, political scientist at the University of Oklahoma Samer Shehata told The New York Times that the video resembled “a Saturday Night Live skit–unbelievable, ludicrous, almost comic if it wasn’t so painful.”
All three of the tea party-affiliated lawmakers have been on record denouncing the Muslim Brotherhood at home, but this was the first time any American officials had made such strong comments on the matter in Egypt. Bachmann made accusations about Hillary Clinton aide (and Anthony Weiner’s wife) Huma Abedin’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood last year. King has made similar suggestionsabout President Obama himself. And Gohmert has proposed that the FBI is working with the Muslim Brotherhood to impose Sharia law in America.

[VIDEO] Tavis Smiley to Obama: Take MLK Bust Out of Oval Office

(CNSNews.com) – Radio host Tavis Smiley said President Barack Obama should remove the bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which was added to the Oval Office during Obama’s first term, because of the president’s willingness to go to war with Syria.
“Here you have a war president with a peace prize. Once again the parallel between King and Obama just doesn’t measure up. He ought to just take that bust out of the Oval Office if you’re going to dishonor Martin in this way,” West said.
Obama added the bust of MLK to the Oval Office in 2009, replacing the bust of Sir Winston Churchill, marking the first time an image of an African-American was displayed in the president’s work quarters, NBC Washington reported on March 19, 2009.

Sen. Thune Introduces Bill to Prevent Union Carve Out in Obamacare

Sen. John Thune (R., S.D.) / APA top Senate Republican has introduced legislation to prevent labor unions from receiving an exemption to Obamacare’s requirements in the wake of reports that they are seeking relief from the Obama administration.
Sen. John Thune (R., S.D.) announced Monday that he is introducing the “Union Bailout Prevention Act” to prevent some union members from receiving subsidies for a certain kind of healthcare plan that already receive an effective subsidy through the tax code.
The Obama administration is reportedly working on accommodating union concerns about the healthcare overhaul, Inside Health Policy has reported.
“Despite championing ObamaCare’s passage in 2010, union leaders are now awaking to the ugly reality of ObamaCare that most Americans have predicted all along, including higher health care costs,” Thune said in the statement.
“Now that the full consequences of the Democrats’ law are nearing, these same union leaders are seeking a special backroom deal from the White House.”
Thune, chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, called on the Obama administration to delay the individual mandate instead of accommodating the unions’ demands.
The U.S. labor movement has been fracturing over several Obama administration policies, with some of the most public disagreements over Obamacare.
Labor unions are a driving force behind the Democratic Party, putting both their organizational muscle and also their financial heft almost exclusively behind Democrats.

At AFL-CIO convention: A diverse crowd, long journeys, high hopes

The 2013 AFL-CIO Convention in Los AngelesThe quadrennial convention of the AFL-CIO. the nation's largest labor federation, has attracted a diverse crowd from across the nation and around the world to the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Among the 5,000 scheduled to attend were day laborers from as far away as Florida and taxi drivers from New York City.
But there were also several international guests, including representatives from the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity, trade unionists from Pakistan and representatives from the Myanmar Federation of Trade Unions.
Mohammed Zahoor Awan, general secretary of the Pakistan Workers Federation, said he came to share "brotherly feelings" and solidarity with the American labor movement.
The convention also has brought together new allies such as the Sierra Club, the NAACP and the National Council of La Raza.
They came at a time when only about 11% of U.S. workers are unionized, according to the most recent figures available, down from 35% in 1950.
In particular, there is an attempt to attract and to elevate the status of domestic workers in the U.S. as a potential source of future strength and influence. That effort includes bringing together international domestic worker leadership from as far away as South Africa and Hong Kong.

Ed Asner Explains Hollywood Silence on Obama, Syria: They 'Don't Want to Feel Anti-Black'

Ed Asner Mike Farrell - H 2013Don't look for Iraq War-style protests, says the liberal activist, who -- like "M*A*S*H" star Mike Farrell -- opposes military action.

In 2003, ahead of a U.S. attack on Iraq, a robust anti-war movement in Hollywood included a TV commercial starring Martin Sheen and Sean Penn visiting Baghdad. There were online petitions signed by Ed Asner; letters to President George W. Bush pleading for peace were signed by Matt DamonTim RobbinsBarbra Streisand and Alec Baldwin; former M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell fronted multiple press conferences where celebrities denounced war. In interviews, Janeane Garofalo stopped identifying herself as an actor -- she preferred to be called a member of the U.S. anti-war movement.
The good news for President Barack Obama as he considers a military response against Syria for using chemical weapons against rebels is that he probably won't have to deal with a similar anti-war movement from Hollywood. But that's not because there isn't opposition. It's just not organized, and, as Asner and Farrell – two of the industry's most vocal progressive activists -- told The Hollywood Reporter Friday, perhaps it never will be.
While some conservatives see hypocrisy, Farrell says that an all-out war in Iraq under Bush, a Republican who was very unpopular in Hollywood, was a much bigger deal than potential missile strikes against Syria under the direction of Obama, a Democrat who drew millions for his campaigns from showbiz industry donors.

'Hitchhiker's Guide' to Reid bringing the Senate back early over Syria

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was bringing the Senate back on Friday for a brief legislative session. Here's some background on why, and what happens after Friday:

The move will break a nearly interminable, five-week congressional recess a few days early. Neither the Senate nor House has conducted any legislative business nor opened the doors to their respective chambers since early last month. Both bodies were long scheduled to return to action next Monday at 2 p.m. ET.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee raced on Wednesday to forge an agreement on a revised resolution which would assent to the president's plan to hit Syria. A markup session by the panel produced the reconfigured resolution on a vote of 10-7 with one member voting "present."

But despite the machinations and a lengthy, classified debate Wednesday morning which delayed the markup session, the Foreign Relations Committee successfully authored a Syria resolution and aimed to send it the floor.
Which it could do ... if the Senate floor were open for business.

About that whole global warming thing. Leaked U.N. Report Confirms Global Warming Is Nonexistent, Planet Actually Cooling…

Global warming alarmists, Al Gore, we need to talk.
Well, this is awkward. A leaked report by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that the world is not warming but actually cooling, and will continue to get colder until the middle of the century.
You remember the IPCC, right? It’s the group whose 2007 report on global warming said that snow would disappear from everywhere but the highest mountains, icebergs would melt causing sea levels to rise, deserts would spread, people would die in heat waves and pretty much the earth was going to end if we didn’t immediately destroy our carbon-fueled economy with job-killing government regulations.
Well, that’s not happening. In fact, the Arctic ice cap has grown by 60 percent since 2012.
Thanks to the IPCC’s original predictions, billions of dollars were spent on supposed green measures to curb global warming, according to the Telegraph. Now, either those measures really, really paid off, or the skeptics were right all along.

CNN Poll: Obama's Foreign Policy Rating at All-Time Low

A day before President Obama is scheduled to deliver a prime time address on Syria, a new national poll shows his approval rating on foreign policy has hit an all-time low.

Only four in 10 approve of the job Obama is doing on foreign policy, while 57 percent disapprove, according to the CNN/ORC International survey of more than 1,000 adults.

"President Obama's approval rating on foreign affairs has continued its steady decline - from 54 percent in January to 49 percent in April, 44 percent in June, and just 40 percent now," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "This may be a troubling sign for a president who in past polls had always scored his highest ratings for his handling of foreign affairs."

Obama is pushing for congressional authorization for U.S. military action to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime for allegedly using chemical weapons in the ongoing civil war in Syria.

The poll also found that just 31 percent of respondents approve of the president's policies and actions regarding Syria, and 63 percent disapprove.

The president's overall approval rating stands at 45 percent, with 52 percent saying they disapprove of the job he's doing. The 45 percent approval rating is unchanged from CNN's previous poll, which was conducted in June.
