[VIDEO] Former President Jimmy Carter Has Liver Cancer Which Has Metastasized To Other Organs

Former President Jimmy Carter has cancer, and it has spread to other parts of his body, he announced Wednesday.
Carter, 90, had a “small mass” removed from his liver during surgery earlier this month. At the time, he received a prognosis for a full recovery.
But he said Wednesday in a brief statement that “recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body.”
It was not clear where the cancer originated or where it had spread. Carter’s family, however, has a history of pancreatic cancer, which CNN correspondent Sanjay Gupta said could be afflicting the former president. Carter lost his father, brother and two sisters to the disease. His mother had breast cancer, which later moved to her pancreas.

Tennessee family accused of spending $187M raised for cancer charities on themselves

Federal regulatory officials Tuesday accused a Tennessee family of spending more than $187 million collected for cancer charities on cars, gym memberships, cruise vacations, and college tuition.
The Federal Trade Commission, in a federal lawsuit joined by all 50 states and the District of Columbia, said that James T. Reynolds Sr., his ex-wife and son raised the money through their various charities: The Cancer Fund of America in Knoxville, Tennessee, and its affiliated Cancer Support Services; The Breast Cancer Society in Mesa, Arizona; and the Children's Cancer Fund of America in Powell, Tennessee.
The charities hired telemarketers to collect $20 donations from people across the country, telling consumers that they provided financial aid and other support to cancer patients, including pain medication, transportation to chemotherapy visits and hospice care.
But little money made it to cancer patients, as the groups "operated as personal fiefdoms characterized by rampant nepotism, flagrant conflicts of interest, and excessive insider compensation" with none of the controls used by bona fide charities, the FTC said Tuesday.
Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, declined to say whether authorities were pursuing a separate criminal investigation against the Reynolds family, saying only that the agency did not have the authority to do so.

Harry Reid Responds to Backlash Over Remarks About Kids With Cancer

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid got in some hot water over responding to a question about funding the NIH to help just one child with cancer with the question, “Why would we want to do that?” On Bill Press‘ radio show, Reid defended himself from the criticism and turned the tables on the GOP.
Reid explained he meant to say was, “Why would we want to have the House of Representatives,John Boehner cherry-pick what stays open and what to be––what should be closed?”
He insisted he does care about helping children with cancer, but also cares about agencies like the CDC as well, and they should be funded too.
“We can’t fall into the trap, and here is the trap of the Cruz-led Republicans, and that is this: ‘Listen, we’ll cherry-pick, we’ll open this today and this tomorrow, and finally at the end, everything will be open except the money to finish Obamacare.’”
He also tweeted out a message scolding Republicans for trying to distort his message.

'Why would we want to do that?': Harry Reid dismisses funding children's cancer research separately from the rest of government

Reid produced cringes and disbelief among reporters Wednesday by refusing to take CNN reporter Dana Bash's bait about the value of sparing children's cancer funding from the shutdown axeThe U.S. Senate's leading Democrat found himself in embarrassingly hot water Wednesday, after dismissing the idea of funding children's cancer research through the government shutdown.

'If you can help one child, why won't you do it?' asked CNN reporter Dana Bash.

'Why, why, why would we want to do that?' countered Reid.

'I have 1100 people at Nellis Air Force Base that are sitting home,' because of government employee furloughs, he told Bash and a roomful of other journalists. 'They have – they have a few problems of their own.'

'This is – to have someone of your intelligence suggest such a thing maybe means you're as irresponsible and reckless.'

The CNN correspondent had challenged Senate Democrats' earlier lament that clinical trials for pediatric cancer therapies were among government services cut off Monday at midnight. The two houses of Congress, run by opposite parties, were unable to agree on the terms of a continuing resolution to fund the government in its new fiscal year.

'You all talked about children with cancer unable to go to clinical trials,' she began. 'The House is presumably going to pass a bill that funds the NIH. Will you, at least, pass that? And if not, aren't you playing the same political games that Republicans are?'

House Republicans have pressed forward with a collection of six legislative proposals to independently fund specific portions of the federal government through the length of the shutdown.

The first one, which provided military servicemen and women with paycheck guarantees, passed easily on Monday. After Reid declined to block it in the Senate, President Obama signed it two hours before the shutdown deadline.

But the other five proposals, including one that would continue funding the National Institutes of Health, are still in doubt.
That bill, and another freeing up money to pay members of the National Guard and military reserve units, were added on Wednesday to three that failed to pass a day earlier. Those isolate and fund the national parks, museums and monuments; the Department of Veterans Affairs; and the city government of Washington, D.C.

Red Sox pitcher goes to bat for the littlest teammates in fight against cancer

It was an uncharacteristically sizzling hot day in Southern California, and fans were gathering on a Friday evening to watch the first game of a three-game series between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Among the lucky ones to actually go down on the field were the Youseff family from Southern California, escorted onto the diamond by Sarah Narracci, a community relations representative for the Red Sox, and Jeri Wilson, the executive director of the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.

Six-year-old Zein Youseff was bouncing around, at times nearly coming out of his skin, because he was about to meet his hero -- Red Sox pitching ace Jon Lester.

Zein and Jon have a common bond. Cancer.

Just as his Major League career was taking hold in 2006, Lester discovered he had non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Lester is now cancer free. But Zein and his family are in the fight of their lives, as Zein is under treatment for neuroblastoma.

When Zein and Lester met near the Red Sox dugout, the pitcher crouched down to meet Zein at eye level, and they had a not-so-private conversation.

Former Senator Arlen Specter Dies At 82

HARRISBURG, Pa. –  Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, the outspoken Pennsylvania centrist whose switch from Republican to Democrat ended a 30-year career in which he played a pivotal role in several Supreme Court nominations, died Sunday. He was 82.
Specter, who announced in late August that he was battling cancer, died at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, said his son Shanin. Over the years, Arlen Specter had fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin's disease, overcome a brain tumor and survived cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.
Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory that posited just one bullet struck both President Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally -- an assumption critical to the argument that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the focus of Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."
In 1987, Specter helped thwart the Supreme Court nomination of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork -- earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such rejections as being "borked."

But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing "flat-out perjury." The nationally televised interrogation incensed women's groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter, who had battled cancer, was Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator when Democrats picked then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak over him in the 2010 primary, despite Specter's endorsements by President Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders. Sestak lost Specter's seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey by 2 percentage points.
A political moderate, Specter was swept into the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980.

He took credit for helping to defeat President Clinton's national health care plan -- the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward -- and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome. Following the Iran-Contra scandal, he pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA.
