Realize the Dream speaker says “racist” Stand Your Ground laws “work to kill our young people”

Sofia Campos United We DreamJust a month after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed black teenager Trayvon Martin, gun control activists continue to wage a war on Stand Your Ground laws in the United States — but perhaps none have condemned them so harshly as Sofia Campos, who on Saturday said the “racist” laws “work to kill our young people.”
Campos, who heads up the United We Dream network of youth-led immigrant organizations, spoke on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial this weekend at the Realize the Dream March and Rally, part of the 50th anniversary March on Washington. As an undocumented immigrant, Campos spoke out against “racist” policies, including Stand Your Ground.
“Racist policies like Secure Communities, which works to break apart families, and just as much as racist policies like Stand Your Ground in Florida work to kill our young people today, the prison industrial complex and the detention center industrial complex are one and the same,” she told the crowd on the National Mall.
But Campos clearly doesn’t know that in Florida, Stand Your Ground laws have actually been helping African-Americans. Blacks in the state have made about one third of the Stand Your Ground claims — almost double the 16.6 percent of Florida’s population that is black — and a majority of those claims are successful, as The Daily Caller reported. The success rate for African-Americans is also higher than that of whites.
So as “fierce” as Campos believed her rhetoric to be on Saturday, the facts simply don’t back up her claim.

You won’t believe what teachers plan to tell kids about Trayvon Martin

In the wake of the verdict in the Trayvon Martin shooting, several teachers said they would invoke mob justice, vigilantism and the idea that Florida law allows people to hunt and kill black kids when discussing the case with their students.
The Hairpin, a prominent liberal women’s blog, asked several teachers, counselors and professors to explain how they would talk about the case — which reached its conclusion last week after George Zimmerman was found innocent of Martin’s murder — in their classrooms.
An anonymous English teacher in Alabama said that she would be hesitant to formally “teach” the subject, but nonetheless thought it could be brought up in relation to vigilantism in literature such as “To Kill A Mockingbird” and the works of William Faulkner.

Zimmerman verdict: 86 percent of African Americans disapprove

George Zimmerman arrives in the courtroom for his trial at the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, in Sanford, Fla., Friday, July 12, 2013. Zimmerman is charged in the 2012 shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin. (AP Photo/Orlando Sentinel, Joe Burbank, Pool)African Americans have a mostly shared and sharply negative reaction to the shooting of Trayvon Martin and the not-guilty verdict in the resulting trial, while whites are far more divided, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
At least eight in 10 African Americans say the shooting of the Florida teenager was unjustified, recoil at the verdict in the trial and want the shooter, George Zimmerman, tried in federal court for violating Martin’s civil rights.
On the Martin shooting in particular, the racial gaps are extremely wide.
Among African Americans, 87 percent say the shooting was unjustified; among whites, just 33 percent say so. A slim majority of whites (51 percent) approve of the not-guilty verdict in the Zimmerman trial, while African Americans overwhelmingly and strongly disapprove. Some 86 percent of blacks disagree with the verdict — almost all of them disapproving “strongly.”
There is also a partisan tinge to the public views. Among whites, 70 percent of Republicans but only 30 percent of Democrats say they approve of the verdict.
