Reagan on Mt. St. Helens

Why Robert Smith is wrong about Ronald Reagan’s environmental record.
Last week in The American Spectator, CEI’s Robert Smith criticized the organization I head, the R Street Institute, for celebrating the anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s dedication of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Some of Smith’s arguments have merit and aren’t points we’d dispute. However, in the end, he misses the point.
Among our areas of agreement: private land ownership is valuable, and private efforts at conservation and responsible land management should be encouraged and rewarded. Most land in the United States is in private hands and should remain that way. Many public lands should be sold off to the private sector or opened to private use and development.
In addition, we must put an end to senseless mandates on private property and dirty tricks that degrade the value of privately held land. Even the Endangered Species Act, a sacred cow to much of the environmental movement and a favorite of the likes of Newt Gingrich, ought to be reviewed.
But conservation of public lands is not an all-or-nothing tradeoff. That’s where we part ways with Smith.
Smith claims that federal acquisition of land “undermines conscientious private stewardship of land, waters, and other natural resources.” Certainly the amount of land the federal government holds should be constrained, but the truth is, effective public management of a limited number of acres can and should go hand-in-hand with private management. It necessarily supports it. Advocates of limited government should see the value in this dual strategy.

Obamacare Exchanges Will Have ‘Rocky Start,’ Consultant Says

APThe health insurance exchanges mandated by Obamacare will likely get off to a rocky start at the beginning of October, a health care consultant told Congress Tuesday morning at a hearing on the law’s implementation.
Additionally, none of the contractors hired by the federal government to develop the exchanges’ new infrastructure told Congress that they have finished their work, even though the exchanges will open in three weeks.
The consultants, contractors, and business representatives testified before the Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee for the latest in a series of oversight hearings on the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare.
“Very few states will have a comprehensive working exchange on Oct. 1,” said Brett Graham, a partner with the healthcare consulting group Leavitt Partners. “It is also expected that exchanges will experience a problematic enrollment period as states and the federal government work to overcome both known and unknown challenges.”
Representatives from several contractors that are building key parts of the law’s infrastructure, including the data hub that will transmit information from federal agencies to the exchanges, told the committee that they will be ready for the exchanges to open on Oct. 1. However, they did not testify that they have completed their work now.

Pelosi Cites ‘Bright, Boundless Future’ Despite 90 Million Labor Force Dropouts

Nancy Pelosi(CNSNews.com) – Democrats in Congress are working to build a “bright and boundless future” for Americans despite “political obstruction” from their Republican counterparts, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday in a press release.
The top Democrat in the House called the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) latest jobs report “a step forward” and said that Democrats are “focused” on “priorities” that “promote economic opportunities for middle class families.”
However, CNSNews previously reported that according to the same BLS report, the number of individuals who dropped out of the labor force in August “has pushed past 90,000,000 for the first time.” The number of Americans who are no longer part of the nation’s labor force increased by 9.9 million under the Obama administration.
“Democrats are working to move our country forward in building a strong economy that delivers the bright and boundless future that every American deserves,” Pelosi insisted.
She also criticized Republicans for “allowing Americans to languish under devastating sequester cuts.”

[Update: September 10] Censored! IRS Scandal Being Buried by Big Three Networks

The Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) networks have colluded with the Obama administration to censor the latest IRS scandal news. The latest: On the September 4 edition of Erin Burnett OutFront, CNN’s Drew Griffin reported the following: “CNN has learned the IRS had been preparing for that bomb to drop for more than a year. E-mails obtained by CNN show IRS lawyers, the commissioner and Lois Lerner herself were meeting to discuss how to respond when Congress found out with increasing sense of panic way back on March 2nd of 2012. Lerner writes, ‘we are going to get creamed.’”

Griffin also interviewed a former colleague of Lerner’s who said she had a built-in bias:
GRIFFIN: One year later, the IRS inspector general report found ineffective management led to the IRS using inappropriate criteria to target conservatives, but was it political or just a series of blunders? Those who know and work with Lerner are divided. Craig Engle says he began to see a bias from Lois Lerner when they worked together at the Federal Election Commission.
CRAIG ENGLE, ATTORNEY: What I saw was a bias against money in politics of the IRS.
GRIFFIN: Engle, a Republican Washington attorney says although he thinks Lerner is an honest woman, her bias had a partisan result.
ENGLE: Lois' opinion and that of her staff was that if you had a lot of money and you were spending it in politics, you needed to be looked into.
Number of days with NO network story: 6

Last Time Any Aspect of the IRS Scandals Was Mentioned on Big Three Morning and Evening Shows:
ABC - June 26 (76 days)
CBS - July 24 (47 days)
NBC - June 27 (75 days)
The following is a list of key developments in the IRS scandal and how many days it has been since they were discussed, if at all, by the Big Three on their morning and evening news shows.

Election-year shock: Obama boasts of ‘decimated’ al Qaeda undermined by intel briefings

President Obama pauses as he answers a question regarding the ongoing situation in Syria during his news conference at the G-20 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Sept. 6, 2013. (Associated Press)As President Obama ran to election victory last fall with claims that al Qaeda was “decimated” and “on the run,” his intelligence team was privately offering a different assessment that the terrorist movement was shifting resources and capabilities to emerging spinoff groups in Africa that posed fresh threats to American security.

Top U.S. officials, including the president, were told in the summer and fall of 2012 that the African offshoots were gaining money, lethal knowledge and a mounting determination to strike U.S. and Western interests while keeping in some contact with al Qaeda’s central leadership, said several people directly familiar with the intelligence.

PHOTOS: President Obama's favorite footstool: The famous Resolute desk

The gulf between the classified briefings and Mr. Obama’s pronouncements on the campaign trail touched off a closed-door debate inside the intelligence community about whether the terrorist group’s demise was being overstated for political reasons, officials told The Washington Times.

Many Americans believed when they voted in November that the president was justifiably touting a major national security success of his first term. After all, U.S. special operations forces succeeded in May 2011 in capturing and killing the al Qaeda founder and original leader, Osama bin Laden, in Pakistan.

But key players in the intelligence community and in Congress were actually worried that Mr. Obama was leaving out a major new chapter in al Qaeda’s evolving story in order to bend the reality of how successful his administration had been during its first four years in the fight against terrorism.

Elizabeth Warren assails Supreme Court as too far right

Elizabeth Warren is pictured. | AP PhotoLOS ANGELES — Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka denounced the United States Supreme Court on Sunday as a right-wing panel that serves the interests of corporate America, previewing a theme that is likely to rise in prominence with the approach of the 2016 election.

On the opening day of the AFL-CIO’s convention, Warren — the highest-profile national Democrat to address the gathering here — warned attendees of a “corporate capture of the federal courts.”

In a speech that voiced a range of widely held frustrations on the left, Warren assailed the court as an instrument of the wealthy that regularly sides with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She cited an academic study that called the current Supreme Court’s five conservative-leaning justices among the “top 10 most pro-corporate justices in half a century.”

(QUIZ: Do you know Elizabeth Warren?)

“You follow this pro-corporate trend to its logical conclusion, and sooner or later you’ll end up with a Supreme Court that functions as a wholly owned subsidiary of Big Business,” Warren said, drawing murmurs from the crowd.

Speaking to reporters earlier Sunday, Trumka sounded a similar note on the Supreme Court, calling the current panel “the best champion of corporate America” and raising the prospect of a constitutional amendment to reverse the court’s rulings against campaign finance regulation.

Gulf Arab states says Russian chemical weapons proposal to Syria will not stop bloodshed

Gulf Cooperation Council state leaders [file]Gulf Arab states said on Tuesday a Russian proposal calling for Syria to hand over its chemical weapons to win a reprieve from US military strikes would not stop bloodshed in Syria.
"We've heard of the initiative ... It's all about chemical weapons but doesn't stop the spilling of the blood of the Syrian people," Bahrain's Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed al-Khalifa told a news conference in Jeddah.
Bahrain holds the presidency of the Sunni Muslim-led Gulf Cooperation Council, a main backer of rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Its foreign minister said the GCC states were ready to deal with any threat against them based on their support for the rebels.
Gulf Arab states renewed their demands on Tuesday for the United Nations Security Council to take deterrent measures against Syrian President Bashar Assad's government over a chemical weapons attack that killed hundreds of people.
The statement was the first from the Sunni Muslim-led Gulf Cooperation Council, a main backer of rebels fighting to overthrow Assad, a member of the Alawite sect of Shi'ite Islam, since Russia unveiled a proposal to avoid military strikes by dismantling Syria's chemical weapons.
"The GCC condemns the ugly crime committed by the Syrian regime by using internationally banned chemical weapons, which resulted in the killing of hundreds of civilians," said Bahrain's Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed al-Khalifa.

Gutter Journalism: Daily Caller Howley’s Attack on CNN’s Cutter Reprehensible

This is what passes as journalism these days. And no, this wasn’t written by a jilted 15-year-old penning a Dear Diary entry for the first time:
“A loathsome creature like Stephanie Cutter, the roots jutting out from her blonde dye job as black as the recesses of her soul, can push her way onto national television to sit next to a former Speaker of the House and two sitting U.S. senators. A charmless, dead-eyed, tacky sociopath with no sense of ethics, an empty shell spewing her flat-throated bile without the slightest trace of self-awareness, can beat all of us to the front of the Darwinian line.”
Yup, that’s how someone named Patrick Howley of the Daily Caller decided to review CNN’s Crossfirereboot, which debuted Monday night. Forget about content, forget about any thoughts around the other co-host of the program on its opening night (Newt Gingrich). This Pulitzer piece was aimed squarely at Ms. Cutter, a prominent member of Team Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012.
Before we continue, know this: As stated in this space before, I voted for Mitt Romney. This isn’t one liberal protecting another. And no, I’ve never met Stephanie Cutter. From what I’ve observed, she’s an effective media-facing resource to have on any campaign.
Did she engage in stretching the truth, in hyperbole? Of course. All campaign operatives do it, and Ms. Cutter had no problem getting her hands dirty in 2012… but let’s not pretend this kind of behavior only happens on the Democratic side of the aisle.
Given her resume and the trend around hiring politicos while they’re still fresh in the public eye, landing Ms. Cutter was bound to happen at one of the big three cable networks. The easy pick would have been MSNBC, where Cutter would have been quite cozy among former co-workers David Axelrod andRobert Gibbs while fielding tee-ball questions from Mika to Matthews to Maddow.

Arctic sea ice up 60 percent in 2013

arctic sea ice 2012 vs 2013.jpgAbout a million more square miles of ocean are covered in ice in 2013 than in 2012, a whopping 60 percent increase -- and a dramatic deviation from predictions of an "ice-free Arctic in 2013," the Daily Mail noted.

Arctic sea ice averaged 2.35 million square miles in August 2013, as compared to the low point of 1.32 million square miles recorded on Sept. 16, 2012, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. A chart published Sept. 8 by NSIDC shows the dramatic rise this year, putting total ice cover within two standard deviations of the 30-year average.
Noting the year over year surge, one scientist even argued that "global cooling" was here.

"We are already in a cooling trend, which I think will continue for the next 15 years at least. There is no doubt the warming of the 1980s and 1990s has stopped,” Anastasios Tsonis of the University of Wisconsin told London’s Mail on Sunday.

The surge in Arctic ice is a dramatic change from last year’s record-setting lows, which fueled dire predictions of an imminent ice-free summer. A 2007 BBC report said the Arctic could be ice free in 2013 -- a theory NASA still echoes today.

Paul Krugman Accuses Heritage of “Deluding the Right-Wing Faithful”

NewscomSigmund Freud described “projecting” as the act of attributing your own shortcomings to others, supposedly as a coping mechanism. These columns don’t quote Freud often, but we couldn’t pass up this description of Paul Krugman’s latest screed, only because it is so deliciously apt.
In it, the New York Times columnist goes after The Heritage Foundation for, among other things, “creating false impressions” and attempting to “delude the right-wing faithful.” He also castigates conservatives for being cut off from reality in general because they supposedly read only stuff they agree with. The title was “The Wonk Gap,” meaning that the left is just so much more wonky, apparently.
What caused Mr. Krugman to fulminate with such righteous ire? A couple of weeks ago, Heritage put up on our Facebook page an image in which we said that 57 percent of Americans wanted to stop Obamacare. Talking Points Memo, a liberal site, tweeted that we were misquoting a Kaiser Family Foundation survey, which showed that 57 percent did not support defunding Obamacare.
I called the TPM writer and told him that, no, he had assumed wrong. We were quoting a Basswood poll commissioned by Heritage Action for America. Even TPM, which makes no pretentions about impartiality or objectivity, subsequently ran a story which observed “in fairness to Heritage, they did trumpet the Basswood poll when it was released.”

NYC MAYORAL HOPEFULS TRY TO GET TO EXPECTED RUNOFF

New York City's wild mayoral primary campaign hurtled to the voting booth Tuesday as New Yorkers begin the process of replacing the man who has led their city for 12 years.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg never offered an endorsement in the race, but the campaign has been defined by his legacy. The Republican mayoral hopefuls are largely promising to maintain his policies, while the Democrats have offered a sharply different approach.

Their front-runner, public advocate Bill de Blasio, is pitching himself as the cleanest break with the current administration. And while just weeks ago his campaign was an afterthought, he now has a legitimate shot of surging right past the 40 percent mark that would avoid a runoff three weeks from now.

In a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday, de Blasio was the choice of 39 percent of likely Democratic voters. If no one reaches 40 percent, the top two finishers advance to an Oct. 1 runoff.

De Blasio's rise was as sudden as it was unexpected. He benefited from placing his interracial family at the heart of his campaign, connecting with voters over the need for NYPD reforms, and by drawing away voters from Anthony Weiner supporters following the former congressman's latest sexting scandal.

If de Blasio's support holds, the other spot in the potential runoff appears to be a matchup between City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former comptroller Bill Thompson.

'Militaristic' Napolitano hit with laundry list of demands from liberal UCal groups

janetnap.jpgShe is going to do to the California Universities what she did to this country.  Ruin it.

Janet Napolitano's experience dealing with terror threats while secretary of Homeland Security may come in handy at her new gig as president of the University of California system, where liberal students have already presented her with a list of wacky demands.

A letter endorsed by nearly a dozen student groups includes the phrase: “We demand that you implement the following across the UC system.” Those demands include making the system a “sanctuary” for illegal immigrants, barring the use of system funds or resources going to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement (which Napolitano oversaw in her previous job), impose mandatory sensitivity training on campus police and prohibit police from interfering with student demonstrations.

“As people of color, queer, undocumented, womyn (sic), and allies within the UC system, our work is to ensure that the UC is inclusive to our communities ..."

- Letter from student activists to incoming UCal President Janet Napolitano
“As people of color, queer, undocumented, womyn (sic), and allies within the UC system, our work is to ensure that the UC is inclusive to our communities and that the UC system lives up to its mission ‘to serve as a center of higher learning,’” reads the letter, which was initially published on DreamActivist.org Sunday.

It goes on to cite Napolitano’s “specific experience in managing militaristic entities” as reasons why they are “uneasy” about her taking over the system. Napolitano, who oversaw the deportation of 1.6 million illegal aliens during the first term of President Obama, last month became the first woman appointed to head the sprawling system.

SEIU Thugs To Begin Knocking On Doors To Try And Sign Americans Up For Obamacare…

The nation’s largest healthcare workers union announced Tuesday plans to help President Obama with the expansive rollout of his healthcare reform law.
The Service Employees International Union will knock on doors and host community events to help people understand the Affordable Care Act before Oct. 1, when uninsured Americans will be asked to sign onto exchanges to purchase health insurance. The Obama administration has actively recruited companies, celebrities, sports teams and unions to help prepare the country as key components of the law finally go into effect, dubbing the consortium the “Champions of Change.”
“Let there be no doubt, the new healthcare law is working for working people,” SEIU President Mary Kay Henry said. “We are not seeing the long-predicted ‘rate shock’ but we are seeing ‘Republican shock’ as extremists fail in attempts to repeal or obstruct the Affordable Care Act and its landmark protections and benefits for working Americans.

[VIDEO] Dr. Ben Carson: Defund ObamaCare

ObamaCare is wreaking havoc on jobs and the economy. The House of Representatives has the power to fund or not fund it and it should not be funded, the independent Dr. Ben Carson, retired top neurosurgeon said on the Palin Update with Kevin Scholla. “It’s not a complicated legal maneuver and it would force the Senate to act.” He said America today is not America. Dr. Carson had heard from many elderly people who were reinvigorated by his Prayer Breakfast speech earlier this year. Until they heard him, they “were waiting to die.” During the speech, Dr. Carson was so focused on the task that he was not intimated by Obama’s presence at the event.

Dr. Carson said conservatism is logical and also spoke briefly about the cancer of political correctness which he said is rooted in Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals.
About Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Dr. Carson said, “I’ve always liked Sarah Palin. She’s a terrific person. She’s very smart.”

He said she is savaged because she is an iconoclast.

Dr. Carson said as long as people continue to race-bait, Martin Luther King’s dream of us being judged by the content of our characters remains unaccomplished.

Carson Scholars was founded years ago in response to the plethora of idolized athletic scholarships. His scholarships focus on academic achievement and humanitarian qualities starting as early as fourth grade.

He is working on a book to be titled “One Nation.”

Fight Delayed - House leadership will tie a debt-ceiling increase to a one-year delay of Obamacare.

Majority Leader Eric Cantor spent 90 percent of a presentation to House Republicans in the Capitol basement this morning explaining and defending his convoluted plan to force the Senate to vote on defunding Obamacare before eventually allowing the upper chamber to send a “clean” CR to President Obama.

Towards the end, however, he dropped a big piece of news about the House Republican strategy heading into the next fiscal fight — over raising the debt ceiling. To increase the debt ceiling, Cantor said, Republicans will demand a one-year delay to Obamacare.

It was the first definitive announcement regarding what, specifically, the House will demand in exchange for raising the debt ceiling, and a big reason that some of the typical conservative hardliners came out of the meeting relatively placid.
“We think that as this thing is implemented there’s going to be an outcry, and that’s when the delay comes in,” said Representative John Fleming of Lousiana, who supports the plan.

That’s not to say that everyone is happy about Cantor’s CR idea, which will mean passing the funding bill under a House “rule” that forces the Senate to vote on defunding Obamacare before they can pass the CR itself.

Senator Mike Lee, who proposed the original defund-Obamacare strategy in July, ripped Cantor’s proposal as a “face-saving” measure that could actually rebound against the GOP politically.

You Don't Have to Stay Poor By Walter E. Williams

No one can blame you if you start out in life poor, because how you start is not your fault. If you stay poor, you're to blame because it is your fault. Nowhere has this been made clearer than in Dennis Kimbro's new book, "The Wealth Choice: Success Secrets of Black Millionaires."

Kimbro, a business professor at Clark Atlanta University, conducted extensive face-to-face interviews, took surveys and had other interactions with nearly 1,000 of America's black financial elite, many of whom are multimillionaires, to discover the secret of their success. Kimbro's seven-year study included wealthy blacks such as Byron E. Lewis, Tyler Perry, Daymond John, Bob Johnson, Cathy Hughes and Antonio Reed. Kimbro says that many of today's black multimillionaires started out poor or worse. So what were their strategies?

"The Wealth Choice" argues that wealth (millionaireship) is not a function of circumstance, luck, environment or the cards you were dealt. Instead, wealth is the result of a conscious choice, action, faith, innovation, effort, preparation and discipline.

Or, in the words of billionaire W. Clement Stone, founder of Combined Insurance, whom Kimbro met with and mentions early in the book, "Try, try, try, and keep on trying is the rule that must be followed to become an expert in anything." He also said, "If you cannot save money, the seeds of greatness are not in you." Saving is necessary for investment and wealth accumulation. Therein lies much of the problem for many black Americans.

California: Prop. 13 Protects Against the Yo-Yo Effect

Even for those who aren’t in the market, it’s hard to ignore all the news about rising home prices. According to the California Association of Realtors, median home prices are up nearly 30 percent over just the last year. California has not seen this big of a one year increase since 1977 when it jumped 28.1 percent.
But the huge increase in values in 1977 brought as much anger and fear as anything else because that was just before voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 13 to rein in out of control property taxes. Those taxes were going up as fast as home prices and forcing many from their homes.
Under the pre-Proposition 13 system, homeowners shuddered in fear when their tax bill arrived because it would be based on what someone else was willing to pay for a home like theirs, not on what they had paid or could afford. Those whose property values were increased by hyperinflation in the housing market were treated as if they were now “rich guys” who should be taxed on their “paper profits.” But those who were committed to homeownership were seeing no benefit. If they did sell their home and realized a profit, they would find that they would need every cent if they wanted to buy another house at the new inflated values.
Some homeowners today will say it is about time home values rebounded, clearly remembering that many homes lost more than 30% of their value when the housing bubble burst half a dozen years ago. However, most will not be troubled by this real estate market yo-yo effect, because Proposition 13 makes their taxes predictable from year to year. A buyer who pays $250,000 for a house knows that they will be taxed at a one percent rate and that annual increases in assessed value are limited to two percent. This means that the basic property tax — voter approved parcel taxes and bonds are extra — does not increase by more than two percent, and this certainty allows the owner to budget for future taxes.
While providing security to homeowners, Proposition 13 also guarantees stable — and almost always increasing — revenue to local governments. The take from property taxes is estimated to increase in the 4 to 5 percent range this year. However, even in years when property values are down, the Proposition 13 system acts like a shock absorber stabilizing revenue, because most property owners continue to pay under this system that allows an annual two percent increase. The exception is for those who bought at the top of the market and have seen a subsequent decline in value below the purchase price. These folks are entitled to a temporary tax reduction until the marked goes up and full value is restored.
