Welfare Nation by Bill O'Reilly

My parents were children during the Great Depression, and it scarred them, especially my father, who saw destitution in his Brooklyn, N.Y., neighborhood: adults standing in so-called "bread lines," children begging in the streets. My grandfather was a New York City cop, and so my dad did not suffer as others did. But he never forgot the brutal scenes and worked hard his whole life to build some financial independence.
Fast-forward to the severe recession of 2008, when millions of Americans lost jobs and equity in their homes. No bread lines, but much pain. The Obama administration responded by pouring trillions of dollars into stimulus and rescue programs, some of which succeeded in stabilizing tottering banks and auto companies. But along with that, the president and his acolytes openly encouraged Americans to use the welfare system. And now the entitlement culture has exploded.
According to the Census Bureau, more people in America today are on welfare than have full-time jobs. There is a culture of dependency being created that is truly shocking. A recent study by the Cato Institute concludes that welfare now pays more than minimum-wage work in 35 states. So why enter the workforce at the bottom if the government will give you the same compensation for sitting on your butt?
Some believe that the Democratic Party, which champions the entitlement culture, is doing so to assure future votes from those receiving benefits. And right now, about half of all American households are getting some kind of compensation from the feds. Some of that, such as Social Security and Medicare, has been earned. But nearly 50 million Americans are receiving food stamps, and 83 million are on Medicaid.

O'Reilly Talking Points DEVASTATES The Obama Presidency

On Thursday's O'Reilly Factor, host Bill O'Reilly criticized President Obama for failing to hold accountable those individuals who hold responsibility for the various scandals that have plagued the administration.
O'Reilly discussed the IRS targeting debacle, the September 11, 2012 attack on the United States' consulate in Benghazi, Libya, among other incidents:

The Obama Administration, Why Is It Not Accountable?

O'Reilly: The Obama administration, why is it not accountable? That is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points" memo.

As we have been reporting, the rollout of Obamacare is a disaster. Yet the President has not acknowledged that. The woman Mr. Obama put in charge, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius obviously in way over her head, yet, she has not been replaced even as the situation deteriorates.

A new survey by U Stamp says that just 20 percent of Americans trying to log on to the health exchanges can do so without difficulty. A number of health insurance companies say their profits will decline as the confusion grows. And many Americans who really need good healthcare are being denied because of the increasing cost to the premiums and doctors who want no part of the program.

The whole thing is unacceptable because, remember, the Obama administration is spending billions of dollars just to put the program together. And the computers they are relying on are simply not working properly. The administration has had more than three years to get up and running. Yet today we have chaos and again, no accountability. Even ardent supporters of Obamacare see what's happening.

O'Reilly: 'These Brave Americans Sacrificed Their Lives For This Country. And They Get This?

In tonight’s Talking Points Memo, O’Reilly blasted the President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel for allowing  payments to be stopped to the families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan. O’Reilly believes that Hagel should resign immediately. “These brave Americans sacrificed their lives for this country. And they get this? They get this?”

MSNBC's Sharpton Mocks O'Reilly Retraction and Questions 'Accuracy'

On Friday's PoliticsNation, MSNBC's Al Sharpton used Bill O'Reilly's recent retraction and apology to mock the FNC host by suggesting that The O'Reilly Factor generally lacks accuracy.

After a clip of O'Reilly asserting that "I know you guys watch the Factor for accuracy," Sharpton cracked:
Really? People watch The Factor for accuracy? Hmm. Sounds like another false statement that needs to be corrected.
Introducing the segment about O'Reilly correcting himself for claiming that Republicans were not invited to take part in the Martin Luther King, Jr., 50th anniversary commemoration, the MSNBC host began:
We're back with more fallout from the incredible Republican snub of the march on Washington. Today everyone is talking about a big unexpected apology.
Then came a clip of the FNC host:
Last night, during my discussion with James Carville about the Martin Luther King commemoration, I said there were no Republican speakers invited. Wrong. I was wrong. Some Republicans were asked to speak. They declined, and that was a mistake. They should have spoken. Now, the mistake entirely on me. I simply assumed that since all the speakers were liberal Democrats, Republicans were excluded.
O'Reilly added:
So here is the tip of the day. Always check out the facts before you make a definitive statement. And when you make a mistake, admit it.  By the way, I'm sorry I made that mistake. It's very annoying because I know you guys watch The Factor for accuracy.
Below is a complete transcript of the segment from the Friday, August 30, PoliticsNation on MSNBC:
AL SHARPTON: We're back with more fallout from the incredible Republican snub of the march on Washington. Today everyone is talking about a big unexpected apology.

BILL O'REILLY, FNC: Last night, during my discussion with James Carville about the Martin Luther King commemoration, I said there were no Republican speakers invited. Wrong. I was wrong. Some Republicans were asked to speak. They declined, and that was a mistake. They should have spoken.

Juan Williams Calls Out 'Corrupted' Civil Rights Leaders: 'They're Happy to Take the Money and Shut Up'

FOX NEWS INSIDER - Juan Williams praised Bill O’Reilly’s Talking Points Memo on Monday night’s Factor. The memo focused on how America has progressed since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his infamous “I Have A Dream” speech 50 years ago and where the nation needs to go from here.

Williams said the tradition of Dr. King is to stand up and act against bad schools, rap culture and the breakdown of the traditional family.

“The civil rights challenge of this generation is education,” Williams said. “Dr. King would never allow anybody to buy his silence, to buy him off.”

He charged that unions are paying off civil rights leaders like Reverend Al Sharpton so that they will not support charter schools and education vouchers. “Poor people need better schools and you can’t make excuses at the cost of our children and our children’s future.”

Sharpton Fires Back At O’Reilly: Since When Are You The ‘Expert On What African-Americans Want?’

MSNBC’s Al Sharpton took Bill O’Reilly’s recent comments about race head-on Friday evening, after the Fox anchor singled him out last night for being “in business with people who put out entertainment harmful to children.” Sharpton called it “ridiculous” that O’Reilly is somehow the “expert on what the vast majority of African-Americans want.”
“In the time since George Zimmerman’s acquittal,” Sharpton declared, “some right-wingers have gone into overdrive to push the most negative stereotypes of the African-American community for their own gain.” He lumped O’Reilly in with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity as the “unholy triumvirate of right-wing reaction” that has “been desperate not to have a real conversation about the injustices of the justice system.”
Sharpton mocked O’Reilly and others for their sudden concern about gang violence in Chicago, something he said “many of us in African-American community” have been talking about for months. “Better late than never, I guess.” On O’Reilly’s focus on the breakdown of the African-American family, Sharpton asked, “Is Bill O’Reilly saying George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin because Trayvon was born out of wedlock, even though he wasn’t? That’s ridiculous, right?”
“All of this is an effort to avoid addressing the urgent topic that something is fundamentally flawed with our justice system if laws like Stand Your Ground allow a kid to be gunned down,” Sharpton continued. “But Rush, Hannity, O’Reilly don’t want to talk about that.”
Sarcastically calling O’Reilly the “expert on the vast majority of what African-Americans want,” Sharpton said, “we need a real conversation about justice in this country, not the same old right-wing divide and conquer garbage. Bill O’Reilly, the Willie Horton stuff has got to go.”

Sandy's Lesson

Here's the big lesson from mega storm Sandy. Mother Nature sneers at high tech, mocks modern convenience and couldn't care less about what kind of person you are - she will smack you if she wants.

Many of us have forgotten about nature as we have become addicted to machines. We must have gizmos. Sandy laughed and took them away. Power, gone. Internet, dark. Cell phones, not happening. Even your landline phone - not available because "all circuits are busy."

Suddenly, it was 1850 with one exception: battery operated flashlights and radios.

So what is the lesson here?

Well, actually there are a few. First, that no government agency can help you when disaster strikes. Any assistance will be after the fact and painstakingly slow.

Second, that in order to ride out any storm effectively, you should be self-reliant and resilient. That means you have to anticipate problems and have some solutions at the ready.

For example, where I live on Long Island, the power infrastructure is a disaster and has been for years. The power company, LIPA, simply cannot keep the juice flowing under any duress. I have accepted that, so I bought a generator. However, during Sandy, the generator did not work. You can imagine how many four-letter words were uttered. But, I had a Plan B. I know some guys who can repair generators, and they fixed mine very quickly. I have a long-term relationship with these guys and will reward them.

So, I rode out the storm pretty well, and that's good because there are children in my home.

Never one time did I think the local, state or federal government was going to help me in any way. When President Obama speaks about government being there for you, I roll my eyes. In the history of mankind, no government has ever been there for the individual. Ever.
