Former Campaign Workers for Bronx Councilwoman Arroyo Charged with Fraud

City Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo with Rep. José Serrano and Mayor Michael Bloomberg at an event in her district in 2012. Three former Arroyo reelection campaign workers were charged with fraud Wednesday.

AND THE DEMOCRATS STILL KEEP CRASHING THE BURNING
THE BRONX — Three former campaign workers for Bronx Councilwoman Maria Del Carmen Arroyo's reelection bid were charged with forging nearly 100 signatures, including Derek Jeter's and Kate Moss', on the candidate's primary ballot petitions, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
Elbin Lopez, 49, Betty Julien, 47, and Luis Vargas, 45, were charged multiple felony counts Wednesday including falsifying business records and forgery. The women were hired to gather signatures to get Arroyo's name placed on the September 2013 Democratic primary election.
Other forged names included sports announcer Joe Buck and New York Giants defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, the DA's Office said.
The petitions also included some fake addresses, including a Citibank branch and a drug rehabilitation program, prosecutors said.
The nine-month investigation into the fraud uncovered no other criminal conduct by any campaign staff, according to the DA's office.
The women were arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court and released without bail.
They face up to seven years in prison.
Arroyo was first elected in 2005 and serves District 17, which includes Melrose, Hunts Point and Longwood.
"From the very onset, I believed the actions of the individuals involved were unacceptable and that they had violated the law," said Arroyo in a statement. "I look forward to seeing this case through its conclusion."

At least 4 dead as Metro-North passenger train derails in New York City

Metro North derailment At least four people are dead after a Metro-North passenger train derailed on its way to New York City, sources tell FoxNews.com.
There are "dozens of injuries” in the accident that occurred at 7:20 a.m., about 100 feet north of the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, according to Metro-North.
A Metro-North spokesman tells FoxNews.com the derailment involved the commuter train departing Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County at 5:54 a.m. -- the second train to leave that station on Sunday.
The derailed train was due to arrive at Manhattan’s Grand Central Station at 7:43 a.m.
The whole train comprised seven cars, plus a diesel locomotive, and five of the cars went off the tracks, said Metro-North spokesman Aaron Donovan.
The derailment occurred near the Harlem River, and authorities say two cars were left lying on their sides, although none of the cars went into the nearby waterway.
“One approached the water and came close, but did not go in,” Donovan tells FoxNews.com.
