Liberal Commercial Talk Radio Disappears in NY, LA, SF in 2014

2014 will mark the beginning of a massive change for liberal talk radio across the country. In New York, WWRL 1600 AM will flip to Spanish-language music and talk, throwing Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Alan Colmes off the air. In Los Angeles, KTLK 1150 will be dumping Stephanie Miller, Rhodes, Bill Press and David Cruz off the air in favor of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. In San Francisco, KNEW 960 will leave Miller, Hartmann, and Mike Malloy without a radio home in the market.
Thanks to radio consolidation and the secondary status of leftist talk in major markets across the country, the final death knell for liberal talkers could be tolling. Leftist talkers simply don’t have the same radio draw as conservatives; KTLK was ranked #41 in the market in November 2013, with WWRL registering almost no pulse at all. KNEW registered just an 0.4 in the San Francisco market in December 2013, placing it #31 in the market.
The failure of commercial leftist talk means that only government-sponsored NPR remains in many major markets.

Beck Tears Into ‘Sanctimonious Piece of Crap’ Bob Costas for Redskins Commentary

The last time NBC sportscaster Bob Costas weighed in on an issue of national controversy during Sunday night football, he admitted it was a “mistake,” but it clearly did not deter him from doing it again, this time with the controversy over the Redskins’ team name. This latest batch of commentary did not sit well withGlenn Beck, who had some tough words for Costas and his racial awareness.
Beck suspected Costas was going “senile” and maybe “it’s time for him to be wheeled down the hallway by the nurse,” before letting loose with what he really thought.
“You sanctimonious piece of crap. Why is it that all white people think that they have to correct all of the ills of–and protect everybody else? Because everybody else is so little-childlike needs-to-be-taken-care-of. What do these arrogant people think?”
Beck and his co-hosts touted a poll showing 90 percent of Native Americans don’t consider the term to be offensive, and Costas is just the powerful white man who feels he “needs to teach the poor little Indian that you should be offended.”
Beck said this was all part of the “progressive way,” though to date there have been at least two bigconservative voices (one of them a congressman) expressing their discomfort with the name.

Glenn Beck: Obama’s Intentionally ‘Inflicting Pain,’ It’s ‘Sign of a Dictator’

In a monologue on his radio show Monday morning, Glenn Beck asserted that by “intentionally inflicting pain on the American people,” President Obama‘s handling of the government shutdown has been that of a “dictator.”
Beck lamented that the media and the D.C. establishment have largely blamed the Republican Party for the shutdown, and that this week’s new theme is that the president will attempt to negotiate an end to the battle. “Now they are coming out and saying [the president] will negotiate, but it’s the Republicans’ [fault],” the radio host said.
Offering up several examples of government programs “inexplicably” affected by the shutdown, Beck suggested that Democrats are the ones “inflicting pain” while the GOP is “negotiating.” He cited the controversy over NIH cancer funding, the World War II Memorial brouhaha, the furloughing of military chaplains, the D-Day Memorial in France, and the “forcing out” of citizens living on public land, among others.
“This is a strike and a slap across the face,” Beck warned. “This, I’m warning you, America, this is the sign of a dictator. He is slapping you across the face and saying, ‘You will behave. You will do what I tell you to do or I will punish you.’ If your friends don’t wake up and see the nonsense and see what they are in store for, when you’re spending money to put cones on the highway so people can’t stop and even see Mount Rushmore, we get everything we deserve. And we are about to get a lot.”
