Obama tees off on 1st full day of Martha's Vineyard vacation

President Barack Obama played golf with Cyrus Walker, center, and Larry David, right, on Saturday.
OAK BLUFFS, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama is spending his first full day of vacation on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard playing golf.
Obama arrived at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs on Saturday afternoon. The White House says he is playing with actor-comedian Larry David, businessman and Obama campaign fundraiser Robert Wolf and Cyrus Walker, a cousin of top Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.
Reporters traveling with Obama were given a rare glimpse of the president as he leaned back on one leg as his ball approached the first hole. It did not go in.
Obama left Washington on Friday with the first lady and daughter Sasha for a 17-day island retreat.
He is scheduled to return to the White House on Aug. 23.

[VIDEO] DROUGHT? CLIMATE CHANGE? OBAMA JETS TO PALM SPRINGS FOR GOLF

On Thursday, President Barack Obama pledged: “I am committed to taking bold actions at home and abroad to cut carbon pollution.” On Friday, the President told a gathering of the nation’s mayors in San Francisco that they had to prepare for climate change. On Saturday, he flew on Air Force One to Palm Springs, where on Sunday he is playing golf at Sunnylands.

The president’s golf trip comes as Californians struggle with an extreme drought that has prompted Gov. Jerry Brown to issue the state’s first-ever mandatory water cuts. The Coachella Valley’s “water guzzling” golf courses have faced particular criticism, though they rely on their own large aquifer, and many have implemented water-saving reforms in recent years.
The White House wants Americans to know the president cares about the drought: “White House spokesman Eric Schultz responds that many courses have taken water mitigation steps aimed at conservation,” the Associated Press reports. “Schultz says Obama discussed the drought with California Gov. Jerry Brown in a meeting in San Francisco Friday.”
Still, at the end of his Father’s Day retreat, the president will climb aboard his taxpayer-funded aircraft and burn another trail of “carbon pollution.” If Obama truly believes that “we have a profound responsibility to protect our children, and our children’s children, from the damaging impacts of climate change,”  he has a rather roundabout way of showing it.

MILLER: No worries! Obama golfs 150th round as superstorm devastates Philippines, Iran deal enrages

President Obama’s approval ratings may be stuck in a sand trap, but that has not deterred him from sticking to his weekly round of golf. After teeing off on Saturday at the private course in Florida where the film “Caddy Shack” was filmed, Mr. Obama hit the milestone number of 150 golf rounds in less than five years in the White House
The Secret Service loaded Mr. Obama’s golf clubs bag emblazoned with the presidential seal into the motorcade Saturday morning to head to the private Grande Oaks Golf Club. Sporting a blue polo shirt with tan slacks and a cap, he spent five hours on the private course with former NBA star Alonzo Mourning, friend Cyrus Walker and former U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
Mr. Obama wasn’t much of a duffer before he ran for president. His regularity on the green started on April 26, 2009. He played 27 times that first year in office, seven of which were during his vacations on Martha’s Vineyard and Hawaii.
During his second year as president, Mr. Obama played a little more — 30 rounds. He included a woman for only the second time when Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius joined on Oct. 10, 2010.
Perhaps time on the links gave them time to discuss all the people they knew would lose their insurance when Obamacare was implemented.Ms. Sebelius also joined the president on the golf course on May 18 this year.

Shutdown over, Obama hits the links - Game #147

President Obama returned to the golf course on Sunday for his first round since before the government shutdown began.

The golf outing at Virginia's Fort Belvoir is the first since a Sept. 28 outing on the same course. That round was his 35th of the year — a new annual record according to White House Dossier.

The president played just 19 rounds of golf in 2012, an election year. He golfed 34 times in 2011, 30 times in 2010, and 28 times in 2009. Sunday's round will be the 147th golf outing of his presidency.
Obama on Sunday golfed with White House chef Sam Kass and aides Mike Brush and Marvin Nicholson, according to the White House.

During the government shutdown, the Obamas curtailed their travel away from the White House compound. The president was forced to scrap a planned eight-day trip to a trade summit in Asia. And on the couple's 21st wedding anniversary, they did not make their traditional outing to a Washington-area restaurant.
