At least 12 dead in Navy Yard rampage; one shooter dead, hunt on for two more

Mayor Vincent Gray said at least 12 people were killed in the Navy Yard rampage as D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier revealed one shooter was killed at the scene and authorities are looking for two other men who may also have been involved in the attack.

Authorities have identified the dead shooter as a Navy employee whose work status had been changed earlier this year, a federal government official told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the record.

While that may suggest the motive was job related, authorities haven’t ruled out anything, including terrorism, the official said.

A senior federal law enforcement official said authorities were investigating whether the main shooter, a black male, was motivated by a dispute with employees at the Navy Yard.

Authorities were still clearing the building early Monday afternoon but expected the death toll could reach as high as eight people, including the shooter, said the official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity.

The two at large suspects were dressed in military garb but are not believed to be U.S. service personnel, Lanier said.
One was a young white man in a khaki like uniform and the other was a black man in his 50s with a long rifle in an olive colored garb, she said.

Lanier said there were multiple fatalities at the scene but exact numbers were not immediately.

A Navy spokesman said early Monday that four people were killed and eight wounded in shooting at the Washington Navy Yard — though the death toll is expected to climb.

Capt. Ed Buclatin, a spokesman at Naval Installations Command, which is based at the Navy Yard, tweeted:
#BREAKING: 4 killed and 8 injured. One shooter down #NavyYardShooting #Navy #CNICHQ
The Associated Press reported six people were dead, though it was unclear if that figure included the shooter. More than a dozen people were injured.

Multiple media reports said at least two attackers were involved in the rampage.

Mayor Vincent Gray said officials are still working to determine the number of fatalities during a press conference at noon.

Buclatin said all the injuries occurred in the Building 197, which is home to the Naval Sea Systems Command.

Obama vows justice for those behind 'cowardly act' at Navy Yard

President Obama vowed Monday to hold responsible those who carried out the "cowardly" mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, while calling the victims "patriots" who served their nation.

Details are still emerging about the shooting. Officials say one gunman is dead, but two others may be at large. At least 10 people were shot, and Obama said "some have been killed."

"We are confronting yet another mass shooting, and today it happened on a military installation in the nation's capital," Obama said.

The president had planned to speak Monday morning to address the five-year anniversary of the financial crisis. He went on to discuss his economic agenda, saying it's been his "No. 1 priority," but addressed the shooting at the top and spent the morning being briefed by his security team.

A White House official said counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco and Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromanaco are keeping the president updated on the shooting.

Obama lamented that those caught in the crossfire on Monday knew of the dangers abroad, but "today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn't have expected here at home."

Full transcript: President Obama’s Sept. 16 speech on the economy and the navy yard shooting

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Good Afternoon Everybody.

Please have a seat. Before I begin, let me say a few words about the tragedy that’s unfolding not far away from here, at the Washington Navy Yard. That’s part of why our event today was delayed.
I’ve been briefed by my team on the situation. We still don’t know all the facts. But we do know that several people have been shot, and some have been killed. So we are confronting yet another mass shooting. And today it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital. It’s a shooting that targeted our military and civilian personnel.
These are men and women who were going to work, going their job protecting all of us. They’re patriots. And they know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home.
So we offer our gratitude to the Navy and local law enforcement, federal authorities and the doctors who’ve responded with skill and bravery. I’ve made it clear to my team that I want the investigation to be seamless so that federal and local authorities are working together. And as this investigation moves forward, we will do everything in our power to make sure whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.
In the meantime, we send our thoughts and prayers to all at the Navy Yard who’ve been touched by this tragedy. We thank them for their service. We stand with the families of those who’ve been harmed. They’re gonna need our love and support.
And as we learn more about the courageous Americans who died today, their lives, their families, their patriotism, we will honor their service to the nation they helped to make great. And obviously, we’re gonna be investigating thoroughly what happened, as we do so many of these shootings, sadly, that have happened, and do everything that we can to try to prevent them.

Fort Hood 2009? CNN Anchor Can't Remember the Last Shooting at 'U.S. Military Facility'

During CNN's live coverage of Monday's shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, anchor Carol Costello asked when the last time was that a gunman wreaked "havoc at a U.S. military facility." In 2009, a jihadist killed 13 in a mass-shooting at Fort Hood in Texas.

"I used to work in Washington, live in Washington. This seems so unusual to me that a gunman could create this kind of havoc at a U.S. military facility," Costello stated. "Have you ever heard of it happening before, Brian?" she asked correspondent Brian Todd, reporting live from the vicinity of the shooting. [Video below the break. Audio here.]
Costello added that "this is so unusual, because this is such a heavily-secured military facility. I've worked in Washington for many years, I've never heard of such a thing happening." She may have been referring to shootings at military bases near Washington, D.C., though her question simply referred to a "U.S. military facility."
Below is a transcript of the exchange, which aired on CNN Newsroom on September 16 at 10:01 a.m. EDT:
CAROL COSTELLO: I used to work in Washington, live in Washington. This seems so unusual to me that a gunman could create this kind of havoc at a U.S. military facility.

BRIAN TODD: Yes.

COSTELLO: Have you ever heard of it happening before, Brian?

TODD: I'm sorry, Carol. I missed that question. Could you repeat it please?

COSTELLO: I was just saying that this is so unusual, because this is such a heavily-secured military facility. I've worked in Washington for many years, I've never heard of such a thing happening.

TODD: Well, we haven't either in this area, Carol. This is the first time we've seen something like this, at least in many, many years. Now you remember the Fort Hood shooting in 2009, where that was a member of the service who was convicted eventually of doing that shooting.

Abortion Clinics Closing at Record Rate

Update: The Huffington Post assessed the "dramatic toll" that recent pro-life lawshave taken on abortion clinics, with Arizona leading the way. Meanwhile, the abortion battle has gone digital as more states ban abortions by telemedicine.
CT has examined the new pro-life surge in-depth.
-----
(BP) For Abby Johnson, the closing of a single Planned Parenthood center demonstrated her dramatic reversal from abortion clinic director to leading pro-life advocate.
But for pro-lifers throughout the United States, it marked another exhibit in a hopeful trend—abortion centers are shutting down at an unprecedented rate. The total so far this year is 44, according to a pro-life organization that tracks clinic operations.
None was more telling for Johnson than the mid-July closing of the Planned Parenthood center in Bryan, Texas. It came less than four years after Johnson, burdened by her involvement with abortion, walked out of that clinic as its director and into the offices of the Coalition for Life.
"Knowing that the former abortion clinic I once ran is now closing is the biggest personal victory of my life," Johnson said in a written statement after the announcement of the shutdown. "From running that facility, to then advocating for its closure, and now celebrating that dream ... it shows that my life has indeed come full circle.

Bill Cosby: Black Men Need to Raise Their Kids, Has a Message For 'No-Groes'

Bill Cosby Tells Don Lemon Black Men Need To Raise Their Kids, Has Message For ‘No-groes’

CNN anchor Don Lemon has, of late, turned the focus of his frequent conversations on race to the idea of personal responsibility in the African American community. On Saturday night’s edition of CNN Newsroom, Lemon continued that controversial trend with comic legend Bill Cosby, who has also felt the heat of controversy on the subject. Cosby talked to Lemon about young black men raising their kids, over-medication of juvenile inmates, and may have even coined a new word: “No-groes.”

For the past few months, Don Lemon has courted controversy with several segments pegged to his general agreement with comments by Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly, aimed at solving problems within the black community. Legendary comic actor Bill Cosby has also stirred controversy by airing grievances against his community, but neither Lemon nor Cosby have backed away from their criticisms. In Saturday night’s interview, Lemon asked Cosby to reflect on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and what kind of African American leaders are needed now...

Russian Official Gloats Over Navy Yard Shooting

Add caption
With multiple people injured and the gunman still at large, a member of Russia’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee says the shooting is an example of “American exceptionalism.”
Pushkov didn’t seem to understand the outcry in the U.S. over his comments:“The torrent of hate towards us from American citizens is staggering. One writes: ‘It seems that we (that is, the U.S.) saved you from the Germans during WWII for nothing’!!!”
Поток ненависти к нам от амер.граждан поразителен. Один пишет:"Видимо, мы ( т.е. США) зря спасли вас от немцев во второй мировой войне"!!!
Pushkov was tweeting based off unconfirmed reports of the shooting, the exact number of victims of which is still unknown. The Associated Press cited a Pentagon official as saying that several people were killed and as many as 10 injured.
Pushkov is not the first Russian lawmaker to gloat at the U.S. on Twitter after the White House accepted a Kremlin proposal to avert a strike on Syria. Last Friday, a Duma colleague and former Olympic athlete tweeted a racist photo of Barack and Michelle Obama, then refused to apologize.

UPDATE: Six Dead, at Least Four Injured in Shootings at Washington Navy Yard

At least one gunman opened fire inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning, and officials said six people were killed and at least four were wounded, including at least one law enforcement officer.

Police were looking for two other potential gunmen wearing military-style uniforms, including one who had on a beret, chief Cathy Lanier said. One had a long gun and the other was also armed, she said. One of the three gunmen had died, though Lanier didn't say how.

Ed Zeigler, director of public affairs for Naval District Washington, said two suspected shooters are "down." The shootings occurred about 8:20 a.m.

President Barack Obama, in remarks Monday afternoon, called the shooting victims "patriots." Targeting military personnel and civilians, he said, was a "cowardly" act. He described the shootings as an act of "unimaginable violence."

Witnesses described a gunman opening fire from the fourth floor, aiming down on people in the first-floor cafeteria. Others said a gunman fired at them in a third-floor hallway.

As witnesses emerged from the building, a helicopter hovered over the building, schools were on lockdown and airplanes at nearby Reagan National Airport were briefly grounded.

CNN reported an increase in security at the Pentagon and other military installations in the Washington area.

Less than 2 miles away, security was beefed up at the Capitol, but officials said there was no known threat there. President Barack Obama was getting frequent briefings on the shooting.

Biden tells Iowa fundraiser: GOP is 'now a party where the tail is wagging the dog'

Vice President Joe Biden rallied Democrats at Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D-Iowa) annual fundraiser in Iowa on Sunday, in what could be the first step in exploring a potential 2016 presidential bid.

The 36th annual steak fry has historically been headlined by leading Democrats interested in leaving a footprint in Iowa, the first state to hold presidential caucuses. In his address, Biden paid tribute to the retiring Harkin, who is one of the few lawmakers on either side of the aisle to have a longer tenure in Washington than the vice president.

“There’s not a whole lot of people that I’ve served with – and there’s only 13 people in American history that have served longer than me in the United State Senate, so I’m told – there’s not a whole lot of people that I know who have the character, the conviction and the conscience of Tom,” Biden said, according to a media pool report.
The event sought to raise funds for a committee Harkin runs that supports Democratic candidates, and in his address, Biden stressed how important it will be for Democrats to hold onto Harkin’s seat.

Humiliated by Putin

Spooked because their constituents strongly oppose intervening in Syria's civil war and alarmed by President Barack Obama's inept handling of the crisis, members of Congress were about to vote down a resolution authorizing military strikes.
Mr. Obama was spared a humiliating defeat when Russian President Vladimir Putin tossed him a lifeline. Like a trout dazzled by a fisherman's lure, our president snapped up the bait.
"Putin openly despises your president," Russian political analyst Andrei A. Piontovsky told The New York Times. So why would he help Mr. Obama out of a jam?
The Russian leader was following sage advice offered by a Chinese general 2,500 years ago.
"Do not press a desperate foe too hard," advises Sun Tzu in "The Art of War." "Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across." If you know your enemy and you know yourself, you'll win all your battles, Sun Tzu said.
As Con Coughlin, defense editor of the London Telegraph, wrote, Mr. Putin knows that "Mr. Obama will grab any excuse he can find to avoid military action against Damascus."
And Mr. Putin knows that because he's so vain, Mr. Obama is more likely to act to protect his own reputation than America's. So when another stupid thing Secretary of State John Kerry said provided an opening, the Russians pounced.
In response to a reporter's question, Mr. Kerry said Syrian dictator Bashar Assad could avert a U.S. military strike -- which earlier in the day he said would be an "unbelievably small, limited kind of effort" -- if his regime gave up its chemical weapons.
This was a "major goof," one official told CNN. He "clearly went off script."
What a swell idea, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. We'll ask our ally to turn his chemical weapons over to an international body. Mr. Assad readily agreed.

The Dark Solipsism of Barack: Why a “Leadership” Vacuum May Not Bother Him at All

Obama has now been officially categorized as a failed president of foreign policy. Perhaps it’s now only a matter of time before his transparent ineptness is blamed for America’s domestic debacle of the last 5 years. But what if there were a different interpretation of Barack, his values and decision making?

Consider an entirely contrary scenario—that Obama is using his power and influence to repeatedly create confusion, chaos and decline—all the while playing himself off as progressively—either a stunningly astute political magi, an idealistic genius of a professor, or now a bumbling nincompoop of a leader approximating Barney Fife in the Oval Office. Yet, all the while underneath a glowering and highly committed Marxist revolutionary. Solipsism is, by the way, the sense that only one person’s opinion exists, that only one way of seeing things matters. It is malignant monomania—the default worldview of the tyrant.

Having now heard the universe of opinion on Barack—anywhere from being a messiah to a devil, what do his actions suggest? In a word, a Marxist Revolutionary. That is at least one informed guess with corresponding evidence. Deferring to the famous standard of science icon Thomas Kuhn—the events of Obama’s public life and past are much more easily explained by a Marxist worldview (paradigm) than any other, including sheer incompetence (see Structure of Scientific Revolutions).

Obamacare Is NOT Saving Americans Money

Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report that claims to highlight how Obamacare is working for Americans—but in reality, it actually shows how the law has fallen short of candidate Obama’s promises.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then one chart in the report tells the tale. Figure 3 of the HHS report (below) highlights what happened when insurers requested to increase premiums by more than 10 percent—triggering a new rate review process established under Obamacare. While some of these premium increases were modified or withdrawn, nearly three in five (57.8 percent) were approved “unmodified” by regulators:
HHS_Fig3
However, if Obama’s campaign promises had come true, NONE of those proposed premium increases would have occurred—because candidate Obama promised premiums would go down under his plan:
For those who have insurance now, nothing will change under the Obama plan — except that you will pay less. Obama’s plan will save a typical family up to $2,500 on premiums.

What’s Next For Business In California?

mickey mouse politicsIt’s too early to assess all the bills of concern or hope for the business community given the last minute flurry of action as the legislature closed down for the year.
With bills whipping through the legislature in the closing day of session, small businesses are always on edge but there were minuses and some pluses for the business community.
The most high profile measure of concern to small business was the bill to raise the minimum wage. It’s out of the legislature and endorsed by the governor. John Kabateck, executive director of the National Federation of Independent Business, thoroughly examined the position of small business on this bill in yesterday’s Fox & Hounds while beseeching the governor to veto it. Sorry, John, that’s not going to happen.
While the emphasis here is the concern the minimum wage bill will have on small businesses’ economic calculations as many struggle to sustain their enterprises, there is also a direct affect on entry level workers who may miss an opportunity to get into the work force or see their hours cut back.
On the plus side for small business, AB 227 flew through the legislature. The measure is intended to protect small businesses by reforming potential minor Proposition 65 violations against predatory lawsuits.
The 1986 environmental law intended to protect consumers from exposure to toxic chemicals by requiring advance warnings has often been abused. Lawsuits have been filed against small businesses if a posted sign is the wrong size or the list of products in question at a business establishment is not all-inclusive.
AB 227 takes a sensible approach allowing business owners a short period to fix any defects before the business is subject to legal action.
While more time is needed to assess the influence of this legislative session on business and small business in particular, it must be noted the disappointment in not getting real CEQA reform out of the legislature. Yes, Sen. Steinberg got his CEQA exemption for a Sacramento arena project but statewide CEQA reform is an important issue to improve the state’s economy. The governor was behind substantial reform and much time was spent over the last few months urging the legislature to act in a responsible way.
