[GUEST EDITORIAL] Chasm ahead for Social Security

social security logo - Google Search
Social Security’s retirement system is like a speeding train full of happy passengers. It’s a comfy ride for the current leg of the journey. But the passengers may be clueless — or maybe don’t care — that a bridge is out just over the next rise.
Absent changes to the system, Social Security is headed into a chasm for the next generation. Baby boomers who’ve paid into the system for decades have begun drawing money out in big numbers, but there will be too few working Americans to keep the retirement fund in the black beyond 20 more years. The math just doesn’t work.
That’s the not-so-happy birthday message as Social Security celebrates its 80 anniversary this month.
The good news is that there is enough time to avert major pain if Washington takes steps early enough. It would take the kind of bipartisan bargain that the Obama White House and GOP leaders in Congress could only yak and fantasize about.
The time is now — during the 2016 presidential campaign — to lay the groundwork for that politically dicey bargain.
Some in the Republican presidential field would bring common-sense reforms to the table. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, for example, say they’d gradually boost the retirement age for younger people. Christie gets specific, saying full retirement eligibility should be delayed two years. He’s specific, too, on whether wealthy people should draw from the system. Christie says no, multimillionaires with retirement income over $200,000 don’t need monthly government checks to sustain them.
It’s hard to see how Social Security solves its math problems without these kinds of bold strokes. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Ross Perot don’t need government to keep them out of poverty, which was the original intent of the Social Security system.

Meanwhile, the presidential field contains many defenders of the status quo on Social Security, both Democrat and Republican. On the GOP side, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee would build a wall around Social Security as part of sweeping tax reform. That stance is not far from the recent statement from Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton: “We don’t mess with it.”
Even less realistic was a position outlined by 71 congressional Democrats in a letter to President Barack Obama last month; they asked his support to “expand Social Security benefits for millions of Americans.” The signees were joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who’s challenging Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Nowhere did the letter say how proponents would fund more generous benefits. It’s delusional and irresponsible to ignore the math like that. The facts are these: In 1960, five workers supported every Social Security recipient. Today, it’s fewer than three. In 20 years, it’ll be about two.
The financial stress will be enormous on people in the next generation, and it’s up to today’s leaders to make sure they don’t get crushed.

ROSS PEROT FOUNDATION DONATES $1 MILLION TO SCANDAL-HIT PLANNED PARENTHOOD

The Ross Perot Foundation has provided a $1 million gift to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Texas following the abortion giant’s payment of $4.3 million for a settlement in a Medicaid fraud case.

According to Steven Ertelt at LifeNews, the foundation associated with billionaire businessman Perot announced the $1 million donation last week.
In a statement through Planned Parenthood, Margot Perot said:
For nearly 100 years Planned Parenthood has helped to educate men and women regarding family planning and general family health. Our family has supported this nonprofit for many years because we are impressed with the work they do — providing birth control, scientifically-based education, breast health exams, and basic life-saving healthcare for women who cannot afford services otherwise.
On July 24th, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced that his office had obtained a $1.4 million settlement against Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast (PPGC) for Medicaid fraud. The total settlement, according to the Houston Chronicle, was $4.3 million. The settlement was to be split among the state of Texas, the federal government, and the whistleblower who uncovered the fraud.
The Perot Foundation has given more than $200 million to various charities. According to a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood, the donation is undesignated, meaning that the funds can be used for the organization’s general mission.
Last year, Karen Reynolds, a former PPGC employee, filed a whistleblower’s complaint with the Attorney General of Texas and the U.S. Department of Justice, alleging that the abortion business engaged in an intricate Medicaid fraud scheme.
According to LifeNews, the former “health care assistant” submitted company memos and emails to support her charge that PPGC had engaged in a system-wide plot to swindle Medicaid, Title XX, and the Women’s Health Program out of tens of millions of dollars over the last decade.
Reynolds alleged that her bosses trained PPGC staff to bill government agencies for medical and family planning services that were never rendered, for services that would not generally be provided by medical personnel, and for abortion-related services that were covered up to appear as non-abortion-related.

Presidential Debate, Round 2

Pressure on Obama to check Romney surge at NY debate
Published October 16, 2012 | FoxNews.com
First, President Obama was too cool. Then Vice President Biden was, by some accounts, too hot.
Can Obama get it just right?

At his second debate against Mitt Romney, the pressure is unquestionably on the president to recapture the momentum. The debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., comes as new polls continue to show Romney closing the gap in key battleground states in the wake of the candidates' opening bout.

And the president's team is making clear that Obama will have a more aggressive -- and more prepared -- approach this time.

"He's excited for it," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. "He's calm and energized."
Romney's campaign has said little about how and whether the Republican nominee's style might differ Tuesday night, compared with the opening debate, though a second clear-cut victory for the Republican challenger could be a game-changer. A senior Romney adviser said the campaign anticipates a "more aggressive" Obama.

"We expect he'll launch one attack after another in an attempt to distract from his record and make up for his weak performance in Denver," the adviser said.

Both campaigns are stacking the debate hall with surrogates, who will be in place to spin the performances and try to get their version to dominate media coverage going into Wednesday.
Romney's campaign also announced a fresh endorsement Tuesday morning from Ross Perot, though the former presidential candidate is not on the surrogate list for the New York debate.

"We can't afford four more years in which national debt mushrooms out of control, our government grows, and our military is weakened. Mitt has the background, experience, intelligence and integrity to turn things around," Perot said in a statement. Read the full story on FoxNews.com ....
