Michigan district reportedly lost $60,000 on lunch program due to menu changes

ARMADA, Mich. – Another school district – this time from Armada, Michigan – is reporting that it lost a significant amount of money on its lunch program last year after the federal government forced schools to serve lower calorie food that students don’t like.

Michelle Obama LaughingThe district with roughly 1,900 students lost about $60,000 on the program last year, according to the Voice News. The district had to dip into its general fund, which pays for teacher salaries and supplies, to compensate for the losses sustained by the “healthy” lunch changes promoted by First Lady Michelle Obama.
“Local revenues are going way down because the regulations are requiring us to put out food that the students don’t want to eat. You still have to buy the food; the students just aren’t eating it,” said district accountant Michael Frawley.
“With the new USDA guidelines, we got hit really hard,” food services director Stacy Moyer said. “They limited the protein, they limited the bread, so our nice, big sub sandwiches are now little, so we’re working very hard to do everything we can to get those kids back and try to be real creative on what we can do.”
“So what we try to do so we don’t get caught where we’re not getting a lot of reimbursable meals is we’re telling the kids, ‘you can have your hamburger and your milk, but you also have to take a fruit or vegetable.’ That way we do get the reimbursement money because we can claim it as a meal,” Moyer said in the Voice News story.
School board member Tami Seago suggested the district collect “unwanted lunch foods that could possibly be donated.”
That reminds us of a Seinfeld episode where Elaine suggests donating unwanted muffin stumps to the homeless.

Something tells us that’s not a viable solution for the problems created by the new lunch regulations. How about instead allowing school districts to serve meals students are interested in eating?

Mooch Says She Sneaks Out Of White House In Disguise To Hang With The Little People…

Michelle Obama says her life isn’t that unusual.
The First Lady insisted on Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live that she is still able to sneak out in public unnoticed and that her daughters with President Barack Obama – Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11 — are able to lead normal lives.
“There are times when I do kind of disguise it up, you know?” she said. “It’s a little harder because I’m so tall. You know, so you see people just kind of looking at me because I’m tall. And then it’s like… [gasps] ‘Oh, it’s you!’
“But every now and then I try to sneak out, but I don’t get to do it too much … It’s just a warm-up, cap,” she added before stopping herself: “I shouldn’t tell…”
Asked what she would do if she had just an hour to be a “normal” person, Obama replied: “I would walk out of the door of the White House like a regular person, walk down the street, go to the drug store, go to CVS, go in there, go shop. I’d go buy my toiletries, I’d pay money. I’d get a receipt. Yes. And then I’d go sit on the park, on the park bench and just watch people.
She also joked that she has to be more discreet when reprimanding her daughters in public, noting that she’s perfected the ability to speak to them without moving her lips and with a smile on her face. But she praised their ability to handle their lives as the kids of a sitting president in a “poised and gracious” manner.

FLOTUS: Voting rights are the new sit-ins

First lady Michelle Obama likened citizens flexing the right to vote to the marches, sit-ins and struggles of the civil rights movement in a speech before the Congressional Black Caucus.
"We cannot let anyone discourage us from casting our ballots.  We cannot let anyone make us feel unwelcome in the voting booth.  It is up to us to make sure that in every election, every voice is heard and every vote is counted," Obama said in Saturday remarks.
Recalling the struggles of the civil rights movement, Obama said that it was imperative for ordinary citizens to flex their right to vote.
"This is the march of our time -- marching door to door, registering people to vote.  Marching everyone you know to the polls every single election," the first lady said. "This is the sit-in of our day -- sitting in a phone bank, sitting in your living room, calling everyone you know — your friends, your neighbors, that nephew you haven’t seen in a while, that classmate you haven’t spoken to in years —making sure they all know how to register, where to vote -- every year, in every election."
"This is the movement of our era -- protecting that fundamental right not just for this election, but for the next generation and generations to come," Obama said. "Because in the end, it’s not just about who wins, or who loses, or who we vote for on Election Day. It’s about who we are as Americans. It’s about the democracy we want to leave for our kids and grandkids."
"It’s about doing everything we can to carry on the legacy that is our inheritance not just as African Americans, but as Americans -- as citizens of the greatest country on Earth," Obama said.
Obama also bemoaned the level of apathy in the the country at large.
"How many of us have asked someone whether they’re going to vote, and they say, no, I’m too busy -- and besides, I voted last time; or, nah, it’s not like my vote is going to make a difference? See, after so many folks sacrificed so much so that we could make our voices heard, too many of us still choose not to participate," she said.

Mooch: “Building Our Economy Starts With The Restaurants”…

(CNSNews.com) - Striking a similar theme to one her husband also struck last week, First Lady Michelle Obama said on Friday that President Barack Obama’s tax plan will help build the economy by building up restaurants.
“So I want you to remind folks that Barack has cut taxes for working families by $3,600, and he has cut taxes for small businesses 18 times--18 times,” Mrs. Obama said in Springfield, Mass. “Because what your president understands is that building our economy starts with the restaurants and the stores and the startups that create two-thirds of all new jobs in this economy. That’s what we need you to do.”
On Thursday at Loudon County High School in Leesburg, Va., President Obama had said that hiring new teachers will help the economy because those new teachers will go out and eat at restaurants.
