Whew: Hillary’s convention speech (probably) drew a smaller TV audience than Trump’s

Thank God. I think Trump can handle losing the election, but losing a ratings battle to a dial tone like Hillary Clinton might have broken the guy. He’ll be okay now.
The downside: He’ll be mentioning his ratings win not just every day until Election Day but likely every day for the rest of his life.
Clinton’s Thursday night acceptance speech at the DNC averaged 28 million viewers across the six biggest cable and broadcast channels.
Trump’s speech at the RNC one week earlier averaged 30 million viewers across the same channels…
CNN was by far the highest-rated channel on Thursday, averaging 7.5 million viewers during Clinton’s speech. MSNBC was #2 with 5.3 million viewers. NBC was #3 with 4.5 million.
These are the early numbers. The final figures later today will be slightly better, but probably not enough to erase Trump’s advantage. All three previous nights of the Democratic convention outdrew their Republican counterparts, by the way, and Hillary outdrew Trump last night on CNN and MSNBC. Trump’s margin of ratings victory comes entirely from Fox News, which blew the roof off last Thursday for his speech with 9.3 million viewers but clocked just three million yesterday for Clinton. Did Fox get a big jump for Trump because right-wingers who were already voting for him decided to tune into their favorite network to watch his speech? Or was it a more politically mixed audience that gravitated to Fox last week on the assumption that the Republican news channel is naturally the place to watch the Republican nominee speak? The answer to that question would give us a clue about Trump’s crossover appeal in November.
Obama’s 2012 speech outdrew both Trump and Clinton, but if you missed last week’s postabout convention ratings over time, read that for all of the caveats about shrinking ratings in an age with multifarious media options. Given Trump’s celebrity and the curiosity factor surrounding him, it’s arguably no surprise that he’d draw more of an audience than a ho-hum Democratic nominee. But Hillary’s no ordinary nominee: She’s the first woman major-party nominee in history. The fact that she couldn’t bring out enough viewers to top him despite having a historic storyline to help boost interest is a comment on how “meh” she is to the public. Apart from her husband she’s the biggest known quantity in American politics, the ultimate rerun. And like I said in last night’s convention thread, who wants to watch a rerun when there’s so much else on TV — even when that rerun is a Very Special Episode?

[VIDEO] Donald Trump stumps in Colorado, promises “No more Mr. Nice Guy”

The Republican nominee plans speech in Denver Friday evening

COLORADO SPRINGS — Donald Trump began his speech here Friday afternoon playing his greatest hits, hammering  “Crooked Hillary Clinton” and bashing the media during an appearance at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
The morning after Clinton accepted the Democratic nomination, Trump called her speech “average,” and said he had better TV ratings.
“After watching that performance last night, such lies, I don’t have to be so nice anymore,” Trump said to thunderous applause. “I’m taking the gloves off. Trump is gonna be ‘No more Mr. Nice Guy.”
He added, “If Hillary gets in, it’ll be four more years of Obama, and nobody wants that.”
Trump said Clinton was not classy for not congratulating Trump during her speech Thursday night.
“We’re going to get a lot of Bernie (Sanders) supporters, I think,” Trump said, adding “Bernie sold his soul to the Devil,” for endorsing Clinton.
And Trump promised multiple visits to Colorado, a state he said he thinks he can win.
“There’s no reason we shouldn’t win Colorado. These are great people. Heavy military presence, respect fof their police. Law and order, that’s me,” he said.

[CARTOON] Crooked Hillary NYET!!!

Something very weird about Hillary’s face at the convention

Ann Althouse writes a perceptive commentary (hat tip: Instapundit) on an aspect of Hillary Clinton that bothers me a lot, too: that wide-open-mouth/insane-elation thing with her face.

Specifically, she analyzes a still photo of President Obama onstage with her at the Wednesday night session of the DNC:

She explains the really weird facial expression this way:
… my theory was that she's stuck making the best of doing appearances where she needs to look like the person who is intensely loved but she does not believe she is loved.
The specific reference here is standing next to Obama, who is well liked at a personal level by a majority of Americans.  But remember that ever since she graduated from law school, she has been standing next to her husband, who is even more than Obama a charming fellow  so charismatic that he was able to charm even Newt Gingrich right after the GOP won control of Congress in 1994.  From Hillary’s perspective, her adult life has been one long lesson in being the unlikable one in a very prominent couple.

There has to be a lot of resentment.  The stories of screaming matches, thrown lamps, and the rest are credible to me because Hillary has endured a level of private humiliation at her husband’s hands, in ways overt as in all the extracurricular sex, but also in ways completely unintended, the product of her negative charisma.
The result of all this is a burning desire to surpass Bill, to occupy the Oval Office, and get revenge for his casual ease at being liked.

And the facial expression?  I think it is a window into the intensity of Hillary’s desire, buried deep within her soul, and rarely allowed out.

RNC Statement On The DNC’s Final Night

PHILADELPHIA - Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement on the final night of the Democrat National Convention:
“Time and again, Hillary Clinton’s dishonesty and cronyism have proved she is the wrong person to lead our country as president. The American people have had enough of the corruption, the deceit, and the stonewalling which have been the hallmarks of her entire career. After decades of lying to the public, politically-motivated flip flops, a family foundation that took millions from foreign governments while she was Secretary of State, and repeated and blatant lies over her reckless mishandling of classified information, the only sure thing about Hillary Clinton is that she puts her own political interests above the rest of us.  Tonight’s speech was merely a litany of platitudes which dodged a serious discussion of our slumping economy and our diminished standing in the world under President Obama, topics which should be well-known to her after spending years in his cabinet. Hillary Clinton is the ultimate Washington insider at a time when Americans are eager to break with eight years of a Democrat status quo, and there’s no doubt her longtime pattern of shady conduct and double standards will continue if she is elected president.
“Americans can no longer afford a system which takes care of the well-connected at the expense of everyone else, and a Clinton presidency only means a third term of President Obama’s failed policies, just with more corruption and secrecy. Now is the time to break from a left-wing agenda which has shrank paychecks, left America more ripe for terrorist attacks, and reduced our freedoms. With Donald Trump and Mike Pence, Americans can look forward to being prosperous at home, respected abroad, and having their voices heard once again.”

Exclusive: Clinton campaign also hacked in attacks on Democrats - sources

By Mark Hosenball, Joseph Menn and John Walcott
WASHINGTON/SANFRANCISCO (Reuters) - The computer network used by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign was hacked as part of a broad cyber attack on Democratic political organizations, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The latest attack, which was disclosed to Reuters on Friday, follows reports of two other hacks on the Democratic National Committee and the party’s fundraising committee for candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives.
The U.S. Department of Justice national security division is investigating whether cyber hacking attacks on Democratic political organizations threatened U.S. security, sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.
The involvement of the Justice Department’s national security division is a sign that the Obama administration has concluded that the hacking was state sponsored, individuals with knowledge of the investigation said.
The Clinton campaign, based in Brooklyn, had no immediate comment and referred Reuters to a comment from earlier this week by campaign senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan criticizing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and calling the hacking "a national security issue."
The Department of Justice had no comment.
It was not immediately clear what information on the Clinton campaign’s computer system hackers would have been able to access.
Hackers, whom U.S. intelligence officials have concluded were Russian, gained access to the entire network of the fundraising Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, of DCCC, said people familiar with the matter, detailing the extent of the breach to Reuters for the first time.
Access to the full DCCC network would have given the hackers access to everything from emails to strategy memos and opposition research prepared to support Democratic candidates in campaigns for the House.
The hack of the DCCC, which is based in Washington, was reported first by Reuters on Thursday, ahead of Clinton’s speech in Philadelphia accepting the Democratic party’s nomination.

Barack and Hillary accuse The Donald of Being Them!

‘The Totalitarian State of Not Being Able to Be’ is upon us.  Read their lips if you’ve got the stomach to do so: Barack and Hillary not only love America, it’s the Love Affair of the Century.
An identity theft started by President Barack Obama was completed by Hillary Clinton at her last night nomination acceptance speech.
Donald J. Trump, the populist folk hero millions want to see in the Oval Office, has had his identity stolen by Barack and Hillary.  Just like Islamic terrorism, he was only a figment of our imagination.
The Totalitarian State of Not Being Able to Be’ is now the lay, if not the law, of the land.
Here’s how it looked before becoming official:
Well hidden under progressive policies disguised as “Good for all”, it’s not yet as glaringly recognizable as all those totalitarian states that came before, but it’s making speedy headway toward a civil society where freedom and liberty will be filed away in the Distant Memories Folder.
In case you haven’t yet noticed, you are no longer permitted to be a patriot without being identified as a Xenophobe.
You are deemed as “unreasonable” for wanting protection for your children in public school washrooms without being categorized as a bigoted anti-LGBTQ revolutionary.
You are not permitted to be leery about ‘refugees’ flooding your town or city without being labeled an Islamophobe.  Acting like the latter will get you thrown off Facebook and Twitter, and the day is not far off when it will come with a prison term.

Battle of the Generals in Trump vs. Clinton

A battle of the brass has broken out in the wake of the Republican and Democratic party conventions, as one of the top generals supporting Donald Trump lashes out at retired Marine Gen. John Allen who delivered a tough-as-nails endorsement of Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia Thursday night.
“I honestly don’t know how John Allen can look at himself in the mirror and say why he supports Hillary Clinton,” retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn told Fox News.
Both Flynn and Allen served in the Obama administration. But Flynn, who used to lead the Defense Intelligence Agency, has since become an outspoken critic of the president’s anti-ISIS approach – while Allen helped shape that strategy as the president’s special envoy for the anti-ISIS coalition.
Flynn, who spoke at the Cleveland Republican convention last week on behalf of Trump, zeroed in on that portion of Allen’s resume in challenging his credibility.
“General Allen as a retired officer was in charge of our current strategy for well over a year … and during that period of time the rise of radical Islamism and ISIS, you know, it exponentially grew,” he said. “The strategy that John Allen was in charge of … it’s a failed strategy.”
He said he was “a bit stunned” by his endorsement of Clinton, noting he and Allen both worked with the former secretary of state.
“I cannot see how John Allen can support somebody who perpetually cannot tell the truth,” he said.
The stinging criticism between senior retired military officers is unusual, even in a presidential campaign. But the tensions could build as each presidential candidate suggests the other would put national security at risk.

Donald Trump Heckles Democrat’s ‘Total Meltdown,’ ‘Neurotic’ Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Republican nominee Donald Trump says the Democratic Party’s in “total meltdown.”

Trump fired off a Twitter storm responding to word that former DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down due to her leaked emails, which allegedly show her supporting presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and working against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort also released a statement on Sunday night suggesting  Clinton should following in Wasserman Schultz and drop out:
Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned over her failure to secure the DNC’s email servers and the rigged system she set up with the Clinton campaign. Now Hillary Clinton should follow Wasserman Schultz’s lead and drop out over her failure to safeguard top secret, classified information both on her unauthorized home server and while traveling abroad. Wasserman Schultz’s emails only put the Democratic Party at risk, but Hillary Clinton’s emails put all of America at risk.
Sanders is expected to speak Monday night at the opening of the Democratic Party’s national convention in Philadelphia.

Clinton Faces Open Revolt … Don't Take 'Sandernistas' for Fools

It’s finally here! The quadrennial explanation for why Americans don’t deserve the fruits of their own labor, or — as it’s more commonly known — the Democratic National Convention. There’s a lot riding on this convention for Hillary Clinton, who is looking up at Donald Trump in several of the most recent national polls aggregated by RealClearPolitics.

Unfortunately, the convention is off to the worst possible start for Clinton and her fellow Democrats — and it may get worse if Bernie Sanders and his delegates aren't planning to make party unity their top priority.

I asked the most reliable Democratic strategist I know if Sanders supporters would keep their cool all week. Then, I shook that Magic 8-Ball. It answered, "Outlook not so good." Given the news cycle going into the convention, I'm inclined to agree.
This weekend, Wikileaks treated us all to some "damn" emails that Bernie Sanders and his supporters won't be sick and tired of hearing about any time soon. Sanders spent months arguing that the Democratic primary system is rigged. Then, on "Face the Nation" on May 29, he said it's not rigged, it's just "dumb."

Wikileaks Releases Nearly 20,000 Hacked DNC Emails

Wikileaks has released nearly 20,000 emails it says are from the accounts of Democratic National Committee officials.
Add caption
The release could cloud the upcoming Democratic party convention, which kicks off next week in Philadelphia.
It is unclear how Wikileaks obtained the records, but the release comes weeks after a hacker (or hackers) going by the name Guccifer 2.0 began releasing records obtained through the DNC’s computer systems. The hacker claims to be Romanian, but many suspect that the records were taken by a team of Russian hackers.
Guccifer 2.0 has said that they obtained DNC emails. Other documents released by the hacker(s) include internal planning memos and databases of Democratic donors.

Who gets Absolute Moral Authority? by Michelle Malkin

My 12-year-old son couldn’t remember the phrase “take a walk down memory lane” last week, instead describing a stroll through “nostalgia road.” I knew it would come in handy.
Put on your hiking boots and join me for an educational trip down good ol’ nostalgia road.
It seems like yesterday when Champion of Wimmin Maureen Dowd, bemoaning the lack of sympathy for anti-war mom Cindy Sheehan, declared in The New York Times that “the moral authority of parents who bury children killed in Iraq is absolute.”
No ifs, ands or other hedging qualifiers. Absolutely absolute.
And it was just a blink of an eye ago that the same New York Times spilled barrels of adulatory ink on the 9/11 widows known as the Jersey Girls. Remember them? The quartet of Democratic women parlayed their post-terror attack plight into powerful roles as Bush-bashing citizen lobbyists.
Their story, the lib narrative-shaping paper of record reported, was a “tale of a political education, and a sisterhood born of grief.”
Moms and widows deserved special consideration in the public square, the argument went a decade ago. Their experience and their testimony warranted respect, deference and the national spotlight.
But then, as now, only a special class of victims is entitled to cash in the Absolute Moral Authority card. Not all parents and spouses who have lost loved ones can join the Club of the Unquestioned and Unassailable.

On Monday night at the Republican National Convention, Pat Smith shared her own tale of a political education born of grief after her diplomat son, Sean Smith, died in the Benghazi terrorist attack. Hillary Clinton, she passionately insisted, “deserves to be in stripes!”

Leaked emails reveal Politico reporter made 'agreement' to send advanced Clinton story to DN

An influential reporter at Politico made an apparent "agreement" with the Democratic National Committee to let it review a story about Hillary Clinton's fundraising machine before it was submitted to his editors, leaked emails published by WikiLeaks on Friday revealed.
Reporter Kenneth Vogel sent an advanced copy of his story to DNC national press secretary Mark Paustenbach in late April.
The email's subject line read: "per agreement ... any thoughts appreciated."
"Vogel gave me his story ahead of time/before it goes to his editors as long as I didn't share it," Paustenbach wrote in an email to Luis Miranda, the DNC's communications director.
"Let me know if you see anything that's missing and I'll push back," he added.
Screen Shot 2016 07 22 at 2.25.51 PMA leaked email revealed that a top Politico reporter gave a DNC representative an advanced copy of a story as part of an "agreement." WikiLeaks
The final copy of the story did not appear have any significant edits, and Clinton's campaign seemed unhappy with the final copy of the article. But sending an advanced copy of a story to a subject represents a break from typical journalistic ethics.

Donald Trump’s RNC address could mark the start of an American revival

Donald Trump’s RNC address could mark the start of an American revival

Donald Trump needed to give the speech of his life. He did that, and much more. He laid out an inspiring American Manifesto for our troubled times.
And he did it his way.
Not surprisingly, from start to finish, it is muscular and bold, leavened only by appeals to racial harmony and pledges of compassion for all. It offers a prominent nod to Bernie Sanders’ supporters in a bid to get some to jump the Democratic ship.
Most important, it keeps faith with his campaign themes of putting forgotten Americans first. In contrasting his view with his opponent’s, the Republican nominee put it this way: “Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo.”
And “I am your voice.”
And then this: “There can be no prosperity without law and order.”

TRUMP SETS THE BAR HIGH FOR LOW ETHICS HILLARY

Donald Trump gave the speech of his life to conclude a rowdy, but successful, Republican National Convention. As with all Trump productions, there was showmanship and plenty of self-promotion and the American people loved it. Ratings skyrocketed with over 22 million Americans tuned in to the GOP Cleveland convention on a daily basis.
In his masterful 76-minute speech, Trump covered all of the important issues such as ending political correctness, rebuilding our infrastructure, restoring our economy, creating jobs, taking the fight to ISIS, restoring our military might, ending ObamaCare, and appointing conservative justices to the Supreme Court. However, he gave special focus to three issues: combating illegal immigration, ending bad trade deals and restoring law and order.  Trump also said he would be the “voice” of the American people and lead the fight against a rigged system.
He outlined Hillary Clinton’s abysmal record as Secretary of State and the disasters that she left behind in Libya, Iraq, Syria and other countries. Trump said that Clinton’s legacy was “death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.” He referenced her improper handling of classified materials and her deletion of 33,000 emails “so the authorities can’t see her crime.”
As one of his major themes, Trump outlined an “America First” policy which includes “safe neighborhoods, secure borders and protection from terrorism.”
According to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Trump’s speech rivaled “Reagan at his peak.” Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said it was the “best acceptance I’ve ever seen.”

The majority of the American people also registered their approval of Trump’s speech. In a CNN/ORC poll, 57% expressed a “very positive” reaction, 18% had a “somewhat positive” reaction, while only 24% had a “negative” reaction.  In addition, 73% of respondents said that the policies proposed by Trump in his acceptance speech will move America in the right, while only 24% said his plans would move the country in a negative direction.
